How many CVs have you broken?

Hey they are destined for failure. Dtwizzle you gotta watch that skinny pedal. That will end in a blown cv for sure! Di you fix it right where it broke?


I luckily caught my 5th for 2011 before it snapped. I was doing a re gear and had to pull the front diff. In the process i noticed my drivers cv was completely frozen in the outer joint. I couldnt get it to move. Napa replaced it. THis was mid december.

That front locker really tears them up.
 
I blew both both of my cv's trying to power my way through obstacles. Right now I'm getting re-geared and throwing a lock right in the back. I'm hoping that locker will reduce my need to skinny pedal my way up things.

Hey DeTwizzle we should go wheeling some time, I live right by those trails! I'd like to get some sliders on before I head up there again though. I have dings on both rocker panels, one from Eagle rock and the other from Saran Wrap... Those trails always make me feel like I'm going to flip, you have to choose your lines carefully. Kinda nerve racking and kinda awesome all at the same time

No I was 2/3 up Eagle Rock when she blew so I decided to try to go as far as I could in 2wd w/ the locker on, and then whenever I would get stuck...winch, hence the 6+ winching sessions I had to preform. Luckily I live fairly close to the trails too( we do need to go on an outing Mr.ScottyB!) so I drover her home slowly, and I'm replacing it today.

If you include this weekend, I'm up to 4 now. My ARB front locker took it's first casualty, and probably wont be the last.
 
I haven't updated this for a while. I'm up to 8 now. Last one actually broke the driver's spline off in the diff. I was climbing a sandy off camber hill, driver's front was air born and came down spinning with a POP! :dammit: That's how you learn. I won't do that again!

But what I'm really looking for is inner CV boots.

I found these Porsche 930 boots 930 CV BOOT only FOR SAND CARS, VW, PORCHE, OFF-ROAD TRUCKS AND OTHER VEHICLES | eBay Are they the right ones? Really cheap

Glen- nice build on the axles man. Still holding up? Is that inner silicone boot custom? How do I get my hands on 2 of those?

Both of my new inner boots are torn already and that's just from trail riding with minimal flex. Trying to get all the little thing sorted out now before my 930mi drive to San Angelo TX at the end of May.
 
No broken axles for me, and they are all original with 188k. I wheel the crap out of this thing too....on pavement. It sure helps when your CV's are always level and the boots always looks symmetrical. ;)

The axles are holding up well. We have yet to break one but again we still have not had any hard rock crawling yet. When we claw our way up many obstacles with the wheels cranked to the steering stop, one wheel stuffed, and the other at full droop then I'll be convinced.

Sn0wrunner tore a couple of those silicone inner boots and we replaced them with black neoprene ones. He did have a lot of lift though, probably closer to 4" give or take. I have about 3.5" on mine and haven't torn them yet but I don't have many miles on them either, just a couple thousand. I'm not totally sold on the silicone inners yet we need more miles to get a better read. If you want the silicone boots they are $35/each and IMO it's probably better to wait and see before dropping the money on boots that might not last longer. If you still want them send me a PM and we'll work it out.

Those ebay boots have quite a few convolutions they look like they would rub and wear through pretty fast if you have over a 2.5" lift. You might be able to stretch the boots on the mid shaft to help with that a little.

The axles I've been getting are the GSPs from Advance Auto Buy GSP New CV Axle Shaft Assembly NCV69142 at Advance Auto Parts
I like the axles themselves, it's the boots that keep tearing. The snapped one was my stupidity. To much skinny pedal. I got all 8 axles for $99 thanks to the Lifetime (Limited) Warranty. They finally pulled the plug on me:dammit: they say 8 is the limit!

Anyone tried the Duralast remans? I'm really a big fan of Durlast stuff.

lol, it's called an ARB front locker :D Blew it to smithereens going up a rock ledge/hill when the front passenger tire caught a little pocket between rocks and binded up..

next thing I heard was a SNAP!

Was an Advanced Auto cv.. Not quite oem strength but it doesn't matter with the front ARB locker, it'll eat up any cv axle if you're not careful. I only use it when I have to. Otherwise, I don't break them.
 
I gotta hand it to you, when you break a CV you do it all the way. Love the pics of the carnage. You can tell you were having fun :)
 
Put me down for number 3. It was on Hackett Gulch a few weeks ago trying to get up a rock with lots of loose dirt. Right as I was pulling up the rock, pop. No pics unfortunately. I have developed quite the appreciation for Napa's lifetime warranty though
 
because the stock oem CV axles are stronger than half shafts from the various auto parts stores, e.g. Napa, Advance Auto, O'Reilly's, AutoZone, etc., would it be worthwhile to pull CV axles from 4Runners and Tacomas in auto salvage junk yards? if so, then how would I determine their quality prior to pulling them?
 
Short of taking the boots off to inspect the inner and outer joint components your best bet is to look at the condition of the boots.
