How much grease is too much in the slip yoke?

I did an oil change yesterday and decided to lube the drive shaft. The U joints went as expected but when i lived the slip yoke I seemed to take a lot of grease before the shaft moved. Now Im paranoid I over filled the shaft. How much Is too much and if it is over filled what do I do to clean out the extra grease and start new?:help:

the slip yoke only needs a very small amount of the moly EP2 grease. like 2 ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, 1/2 pumps that's it. the reason a 1/2 pump is so it has time to flow .. when pumping do it slow and feel the pump resistance ..

if the grease gun starts to feel harder to pump then too much is in the yoke.

how to fix it is drop drive shafts and wipe off excess..

on GM trucks you have to drop drive shafts to do this greasing..

the slip yoke only needs a very small amount of the moly EP2 grease. like 2 ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, 1/2 pumps that's it. the reason a 1/2 pump is so it has time to flow .. when pumping do it slow and feel the pump resistance ..

if the grease gun starts to feel harder to pump then too much is in the yoke.

It was real easy to fill. I only felt resistance towards the end when the shaft moved, about 10-15 pumps. There is no grease leaking out but the wife says she "feels" the road more now and it seems there is more drag on 0 braking decal. Again maybe just paranoid but I don't want to ruin anything.

When you over fill it, the grease takes up the space inside the driveshaft where the yoke is supposed to slide into. Air compresses, grease doesn't (easily), so it is now acting more like a solid driveshaft.

Drop teh driveshaft off the diff or the t-case, remove teh grease zerk, then fully compress the yoke. That will force the grease out the grease zerk hole.

10-15 pumps that is a problem............................ .

on a GM truck you just coat the yoke with moly grease perhaps less than 1 oz.. I would drop the shafts or remove the grease fittings and with them removed run it so the excess grease blows out..

sure or just leave it as is. It'll be plenty lubed either way.

haha. I was going to suggest that as well...but that is the much more messy approach. Going to end up with grease flung everywhere under there.

just remove the zerk and do a couple fast stops in the driveway. wipe up the excess grease that comes out, and reinstall the zerk.
