How much power?

Well CT may be a bust. Not one response in 24 hours to my question over there and only 16 thread views. Of course I searched but nearly all the threads I found were over 15 years old. It may just be this platform has aged past the point of anyone really having interest besides us enthusiasts.

Nice thing about his setup was, if I remember correctly, there wasn't a whole lot of fab work he had to do to get it in.
 
I’d be interested in seeing the new crate cummins V6 stuffed into a 3rd Gen. The magazines had put it in a few different vehicles and the outcome was always awesome.

Nice work with the video editing, that guy made the LSX swap in his Tacoma look really easy...
- Chopped the radiator support, there goes not having to cut anything
- 2WD so no worries about oil pan clearance or having to mount a transfer case to to that 4L80 transmission, or the electrical stuff related to the 4WD system
- let's make things more complicated and expensive (AN plumbing is not cheap or that fun to work with) by mounting an undersized trans cooler underneath because there obviously isn't any space in front of the radiator for a properly sized one :nono:
- did he even plumb the AC and power steering?
 
Well bummer, just read Tyler James Inc build thread and he said after he put the 5spd manual in his 2002 he felt the auto had more zip. I would have expected the opposite. Also looks like my 2002 with VSC and TBW makes things a bit more complex in terms of ECU and wiring options with dash lights remaining on. I can't have that.

I've had two 5spd 3.4L Tacomas over the years, a 1997 and a 2000 TRD but it's been so long I can't remember how they drove compared to the auto in the 4Runner.

Bummer, without engine upgrade options easily available I'd hoped this might be something.

Maybe what I have is about the best you can do.

Gonna watch the V8 swap vids over the next couple weeks at the gym, but if he bypassed power steering, ac, etc that's no bueno.
 
We have about a dozen guys at my work with nice built 3rd gens. Many with superchargers. One guy has 33s, a 5 speed, 7th injector, 2.2 pulley, and 4.88s. First gear in the 5 speed sends so much torque to the 8" rear differential that he shredded half a dozen r n p's. They are definitely faster with a 5 speed.

Of all the 3rd gens at work mine had the most supercharger mods. Only thing I didnt do was headers.

The next step is turbo, that's where good power is. Most I've seen on a stock motor 5vzfe with a turbo was at 16lbs of boost putting out 420hp to the wheels. So 500 easy at the crank. In a 4x4 tacoma he was neck n neck with a older viper. He tossed a rod at 18psi. Drivetrain probably held together because Tacomas are lighter weight.
Based on that I would simply sell the trd supercharger and buy the cx racing turbo kit but use only the plumbing and get a decent turbo and waste gate. I think u can buy only the plumbing. 7th injector is good to 16lbs of boost so it should be able to work with the turbo.
If u have a decent amount of money, then talk to Tony the tiger in Canada if he's still around. He builds some cool toyota stuff at his shop. Can't remember his shops name.
But then the tcase and axles will be your weak link.

I had this discussion with my Dad once. He told me this story.
Some of his friends were into racing boats. Everyone had bigger and bigger V-8's with all the common performance enhancers.
One guy got a 4-cylinder and ran it with no harmonic balancer or flywheel. No one could keep up with him.
The result was they enacted a rule banning 4-cylinder engines. No explanation as to why everyone didn't go with 4-bangers.

Tony's shop Home, his Camry is pretty crazy. It's gone through several iterations, in one of his older setups (at least 10 years ago) through a modified auto transmission it made well over 500hp at the wheels. Now it's making over 1000 at the wheels with a manual trans swap. Built bottom end and standalone engine management, but it's still a VZ series engine.

Less rotational mass but at the expense of increased torsional vibration, this vibration previously absorbed by the OEM crank pulley now goes through the crankshaft and beats up the main bearings. I don't know how long it would take before you spin the main bearings running one, but I wouldn't run one of those pulleys on my 4Runner.

Thanks for the info. I looked in to a turbo setup a couple years back when I did the meth injection. The tuning seemed to be a major headache. Had something to do with how the down pipe was setup or something. I followed a guy on here that did one (red 4Runner if memory serves) and he finally figured it out but it took a lot of work and I think he said it still wasn't perfect.

Maybe there's been some updates to solve that issue, gives me something to research this week :):cheers:

Down pipe? I dont understand the issue as far as what that could be. Boost is boost afaik, but a turbo will put out colder more efficient air, and not take power to make power. Should be able to use the 7th injector for decent power with turbo. Next level would be forged pistons n rods and crank up the boost with full stand alone setup.

You will get addicted to this series. Tom shares a wealth of knowledge for us 4Runner guys, which shares the same platform as his taco. From engine mounts, to front drive accessories-- to cooling and transmission mounting, Tom's got the LS Swap down pat for us!

The only real hurdle would be clearing the front diff on a 4x4 Taco or 4Runner. But, a "batwing" style F-body oil pan may do the trick.

One thing you'll notice about Tom's series is that he doesnt cut corners. He keeps P/S, A/C and does it RIGHT.

Sounds like he just ran the wastegate dump tube into the down pipe se the o2 would read better. Which makes sense. Not too hard for a decent exhaust shop.
 
Just finished the series. He's pretty talented and seems to problem solve (seemingly in the video) on the fly. I like his detailed and organized work character.

He's in Knoxville about 2 hours east of me. Watching him do that job on the Tacoma makes me pretty sure I'd have a lot of issues with the front diff clearing an oil pan. I found a company that offered a "LS Swap Service" and they've done a 3rd Gen 4Runner but I think it was also 2WD.

I've decided to do a little fine tuning on the supercharger and meth injection to see if I can get what I'm after to tide me over a bit longer.
 
If it helps with ideas, here's my "To-do list" for items and things I want to do with my 4Runner over the next couple of years. Obviously I have some repairs on there too. Feel free to PM me on any of these, I've looked into all of these and have products in mind and can be done.

Thanks [MENTION=115347]gamefreakgc[/MENTION]. The 2.0 pulley was a no go based on tests I've seen. Looks like the 2.1 is at the limits of efficiency for these. Porting the SC might be interesting, but what it really boils down to for me is the characteristic of the engine. They make power late in the RPM band and have a short red line at 5500 so there's not a lot of meat to work with there.

The speed governor is something on my list. I hit 110 real quick in 3rd.

I'm considering one of the Transgo shift kits at some point.
