How old is too old to buy?

hey all - i'm a first time car buyer, looking to spend around 5k on a 4 runner, and i'm overwhelmed with all of the info out there. when is a car too old to purchase? i've seen some great deals on 1990 and 1993 models (3K) but i'm feeling like i might just be asking for trouble there. any advice would be much appreciated.

I would put more weight on how many miles are on the vehicle, not really how old it is. It also depends on if you will do any work on it yourself, and what you are capable of fixing yourself. Fixing an issue yourself can save lots of $$.

Go for 3rd gen 96-02 they have fewer problems than the 2nd gens. If you do get a 2nd gen ideally you want the 4cyl model with the 5 speed transmission as the V6 has constant Head Gasket problems, and the auto is well and auto and will cost more to maintatin then a stick.
