How screwed am I? Blown Headgasket?

I was driving home from school today when I was near my house the car began acting funny.

Symtoms:
-Shaky at idle
-No power
-Won't stay running at idle
-Stalls often


After I got home, I popped the hood.
-Coolant smell
-Saw coolant dripping off skid plate
-Coolant is all over the driver side of the engine compartment

NO SMOKE FROM EXHAUST!

Did I blow my headgasket again? I blew one 15,000 miles ago.

Looks like you blew a hole in you lower radiator hose just from where the AF is spraying. As far as the head gasket drain your coolant and and look for oil in it. Looks like your running green AF so if it has oil in it, it will look like a pukey orange color.

Conner I remember you took it to a family mechanic about a year ago for blown head gasket.

You fixed one side only via refinishing the head and new gaskets correct?

It might be time to do both sides with new heads or just do an engine swap.

The price I paid the Truck Shop was $2700 + tax for 2 new complete aftermarket JE heads, all Toyota gaskets and misc parts, all labor and 12 month warranty.

I suggest that at a minimum you take it to a different mechanic.

Too late I'll find out what is wrong tomorrow. If it is new heads and the bill is over $2000, I'll pick it up and park it in my driveway then do the repair myself.

I did my car head gasket for the first time in my life and I should say, it is easy (special care at losing and tightening the head bolts). It took about 3 days to get everything in place. Cost me $280 and a shop asked for $1100. I saved a lot and learned a LOT too. Took pictures along the way. Give a try. will work.

My parents are stiffing the bill on this one, but I definitely want to do it my self. I just lack the time. I'm sure it is easy to replace the head gaskets, I'm sure I could do it myself in time. I have school the rest of the week. Then Saturday I leave on my spring break vacation and when I get back, the next day I'm going off-roading.

I'm game to work on a runner. I'm sure we can finger it out. Let me make a call and see how much it actually costs to do a head gasket job. I have a buddy that is a Yota Master Tech. I'll hit him up.

It's not easy I wouldn't say but it is certainly doable. Pull the dip stick and see what the oil looks like.

Good luck man. Hope it's not bad. Which side did you have fixed last year?

Glad I am not the only one having a miserable day. Only my u-joints are on their last leg.

Like you said "This s%*t is old". Dang. Do anything funny while changing the oil?
