How To: AEM F/IC-6 Install, Tuning, and Help Thread

AEM1GR it should include all three .hex files with the installation. They should be in the same folder you save your tunes in. If they aren't there anymore, let me try to find a link or see if I can figure out how to upload them here

Make sure all the ignition values in the area where the vehicle idles and starts are at 0. If not, it will be VERY reluctant to start. Obviously check your wiring too, I suspect something isnt right there if you cant get started and your IG map is adjusted correctly

Can anyone link me to the repository of the reflash hex's pls?

Also, with the RPM calibration, I suggest from experience that it should be done at 4000rpm - the reasons for this will be obvious once you have done it

All values at set at 0. FIC is updates to the latest firmware , both z and x files.
There is an AEM video on YouTube on how to flash the FIC. that part is easy.

Thankyou @bambi_runner

Yes the files were there. I would sometime like to try it all again.
RUNNING HEX z107.hex

1. A hesitation immediately that I touch the accelerator at idle which was annoying, never resolved that one
2. Gave me the craziest low end and mid range torque - nearly rip the road surface off, just put you back in the seat at all rpm.
3. Had an issue from 4800rpm on wards with break down in processing leading to some kind of backfiring, farting and loss of power. Between idle and 4500rpm the power and torque was out of this world compared to some other piggybacks I have used however the ideas on how the AEM worked has led me to some conclusions that are now allowing me to get higher torque out of my other solutions at the low end of rpm and mid range.
5. I did use 680 ohm 1/2 watt bridging resistor to clean up the signal.

Now to try some new/different hex at some point in the future and see what more I can learn. Very promising unit apart from the 2 issues

Updated

Updated to z110.hex now, could be months before I give it another try but at least we are good to go now and maybe the idle response and high rpm issues are gone

Hey guys, sorry i haven't been on here recently, and apparently my notifications for this post stopped working. I will try to watch this better from now on.

Called AEM Monday, explained the intermittent starting issue and now no start, got RGA # and sent it back to them.

Got my FIC installed today. It started and idled just fine.

I have a couple extra wires coming out of the FIC, CAM1O- and CRKO-

No CEL or anything odd yet but I haven't driven it yet.

can I pull those wires or are they needed?

I have a 2001 Tacoma which would be the same or similar to the 01-02 4R.

Do I need the AEM Wideband?

Hey guys --

I've assembled most of the parts I need to do the TRD Gen2 SC install w/ 380CC injectors and the AEM FIC (using the Boomslang). From reading through things it appears that I'm better off tuning the truck w/ the AEM first on the stock injectors, then putting on the SC (and tuning) and then doing things like the 2.1 and the bigger injectors.

What I'm super confused about is the wideband setup. I like what I'm reading about the AEM 30-4900 (Failsafe Wideband) but w/ an '02 4Runner the chart says I have AFR.. do I need to drill a hole in the exhaust, weld in the bung and install the sensor?

Your advice is requested here --
Thanks all!
-Steve

I am starting to tune closed loop and tried both of the wideband and narrowband O2 skews that the FIC can do and didn't get either to change the AFR's on my truck.

FYI 2001 Tacoma 318cc injectors with the AFR factory O2. It is the same as the 2000-2002 T4R. I didn't put in a resistor as I have the afr and "shouldn't" need it.

This is very interesting -- it sounds like the experience I'm about to have here!

@MTD -- with these newer 4Runners & Tacos, do we need the aftermarket AFR gauges and sensors to be able to tune the AEM FIC? Based on Flahart's experience I'm starting to wonder if they {+the whole drilling into and welding a bung onto your exhaust} are a necessity. Please advise --

You need a uego Guage. Pick a brand and install it. I've had one since 2006 when I installed the SC and URD stuff

So, AEM says nothing is wrong w it... And is sending it back. :/
So I took it to the track tonight, specs
2000 4Runner 5spd
SC w 2.1 pulley 9.8# of boost
AEM meth setup
NO AEM fic6
2 gallons unleaded race fuel in 1/2 tank of gas
It runs right at 12.5-12.9 AFR in full boost.
It has 3:55 gears with 32x11.5 tires.... Clutch slipped and had to let out a bit to get it to catch..:)
16.109 @ 83.
Maybe in the 15s w a decent clutch.

I still think it has something to do with the boomslang harness.

You still need the wideband gauge for tuning. You will be skewing the output of the trucks sensor so you won't know your actual AFR from that.

Did anyone resolve the Boomslang harness issue?

Maybe the extension of the harness or quality of wire used in the harness is causing issues with the ECU and how it's reading values? Seems like everyone who used the boomslang harness had issues and the people like MTD who hard wired the stock harness had zero issues.

I built my own plug and play for reference lolbut i dont recommend that unless your and engineer or really really good with wiring.
