How To: DIY ($15) Gobi Hi-Lift Mounts

The fact that the market for Hi Lift Jack mounts is normally more than the price of the jack seemed so absurd to me, so I decided to remedy the issue, and build some mounts myself. I have the jack attached to the ladder for now for a few reasons: It cannot be pulled off by low hanging brush, It keeps the center of gravity down to a certain extent, and It is a unique way of mounting it that just looks badass.:dance:

The Parts I used to be completely honest are tough to find, I found everything but the split ring hanger at Home Depot, and the Split Ring Hanger at Lowes.

2- Split Ring Hanger- Galvanized for ¾" Pipe
2- 1 ½" wide L Brackets (one side is 1 ½" long, other side is 2 ¼" long)
2- 3/8" x 16 x ¾"long Grade 8 bolts
4- 3/8" washers
2- ½" x 16 x 1 ½" long Grade 8 Bolts
2- ½" washers
2- ½" lock washers
2- ½" x 16 wing nuts
1- Can Paint & Primer - Semi Gloss Black

Review: This mount is solid! I bought an isolator to keep the handle from rattling, but the jack mechanism still makes noise over sharp bumps. To remedy this, I will use a neoprene jack cover. The jack itself does not stand higher than the gobi rack, and no lower than the bumper step, fits pretty damn perfectly, actually. This mount can also be twisted and used to mount the jack directly behind the ladder, but I wanted to to be beside it. Hope this helps some of you out there who also hate that Hi Lift mounts are so goddamn overpriced

And just as a failsafe:
I am not liable for improper installation and Hi Lift becoming a hazard in following traffic! BE RESPONSIBLE WHEN MOUNTING THIS BRACKET! This is a helpful mounting option for your use.

This is excellent. In so many ways.
I might mount mine horizontally over the bumper in this manner. Would be a lot of additional weight on the struts, though. Or maybe mount the jack upside down so the heavy base is not extended so far out when the tailgate is open.
Possibilities are endless. Thanks for sharing!

In running the Baja ladder(first one they sold, I'm told), but it looks like it's 3/4". It isn't straight up like yours, but follows somewhat the contour of the truck. No matter, I think it might even be elegant in its final iteration..

Right now my high lift is wrapped up in an old sheet and laying across the floorboard behind the front seats. Not exactly secure there, either.

I have some quick fists for mounting, too. I'd still properly secure it with bolts through the high lift, but the rubber may help dampen vibrations.

Another benefit to mounting upside down: with a neoprene boot, it won't be a water pitcher.

A small critique; do you think those screws for the split ring hanger are a little anemic? Everything else seems so robust, a small improvement might be to drill those holes out just a touch and use a through bolt 1/4-20 or so there instead. Obviously only if that retains enough surrounding material not to compromise the integrity of the ring.

I thought that, but not really concerned about it, these mounts are solid! no moving around, and I'd rather have the hanger work as it was engineered than risk making the surrounding metal too thin

So I have easily found all of the pieces / parts here, including the split ring hangers, with the exception of the L brackets. The friendly folks at Lowes, Home Depot, Ace, and Fastenal all look at me funny when I show them these pictures and explain what I am trying to do. All I can find are inside brace angles with small screws (like you would use on a window or door corner) that are either too large or too flimsy for this application. Where in the world did you find these L Brackets? Did you salvage them from somewhere or store bought? If store, what were they sold as (function)?

Thanks....after this parts search I have almost given in to paying out the arse for one of the manufactured mount systems.

I think it's a good mod....

but...


I would nut those bolts that hold those two clamp halves together, and also would use a safety strap(in the event it came loose, or was jarred loose....the last thing you want is a 50lb. 4 foot high chunk of steel cartwheeling off your truck, smashing into it, or even worse someone else.

Those hangers are designed for dead load, not dynamic load (a friggin engineer can hop in here any time) so I would take some precautions.

Surprised the lift gate struts handle all that weight....
