I think it's a good mod....

but...


I would nut those bolts that hold those two clamp halves together, and also would use a safety strap(in the event it came loose, or was jarred loose....the last thing you want is a 50lb. 4 foot high chunk of steel cartwheeling off your truck, smashing into it, or even worse someone else.

Those hangers are designed for dead load, not dynamic load (a friggin engineer can hop in here any time) so I would take some precautions.

This reflects my thoughts exactly. If I go this route I will nut the pipe clamp bolts and use lock nuts on the bolts securing the jack.....such that if someone wants to steal they will at least need the appropriate socket / wrench. I do have the super strong Gobi struts to help with weight, however I remain concerned that the pipe clamps will wear the finish from my ladder, in which case I would need some sort of isolation and/or protection for the finishes.

I love the look of the Gobi on the rear, but I may just have to wait for the day I get my CBI. For now, this is the route I'll probably go:

Here is what I feel is a better choice for something structural. They have flat spots, double wide, different materials...etc.

When I ordered my gobi they just offered to give me the hi lift mount for free so I'd say that's a decent deal. Otherwise it's very overpriced and they know it which is why I'm sure they offered it with my rack and ladder purchase

I would be really cautious of the struts. I have HD ones and have replaced once already. They don't work as well in cold temps when they aren't working well...if you get what I am saying...lol

I would also go Pat's route, add some security nuts, and a strap (as I hate noises on my truck) and the hi-lift is a total noise maker.

I agree. Those wing nuts are easy to turn and spin off. A bike cable lock or U-lock could bolt it to the roof ladder.

Nice work with the improvised hardware. This whole system could attach to the top of the rack just as easily. You're right, the mounts are too expensive for what they are. Thanks for posting this.

Keep an eye on the ladder mounting points since you've added an additional load to the ladder (i.e. cyclic fatigue loads while driving down bumpy roads/trails) The weight of a man climbing on the ladder is greater than the weight of the jack, but it's a static load.

Very interesting but I'd be so worried about the struts. I really would like to know how this will do in the long run. I just got the Gobi, and a hi-lift but my solution to mount it on my prinsu rack (pelfreybilt mount) isnt exaclty working out in real life thus far.
