Thank you! I will disassemble tomorrow and take some measurements and post updates.
Do you guys have part numbers for the inner and outer seal that mount onto the CV shaft? I've never been able to find them and it sounds like you guys had no trouble locating them.
Hey just a reminder. It's damn near impossible to hammer in a near outer wheel seal. You need to put it on the cv axel and let the axel nut snug it up. I was having a mf moment when I remembered someone mentioning that on this forum. It was so easy it was stupid.
I think the answer depends on mileage, whether you were having any issues/noises with the joint, how bad the boot tear was, driving conditions, and how long it has been this way. I can tell you from my experience, reman cv axles can be worse than your own OEM axles. Best option is buy new cv axles, but it a cost/risk decision. Rebuilding your self takes time to do properly. I would buy new or rebuild, but test and inspect your existing cv axle bearings after cleaning.
If you are willing to use an aftermarket cv axle, then new is definitely the way to go. There is not much price different. NAPA in my area sells new for $81 (no core) and $62 for reman (after core). For $19 you don't have to worry about how good the rebuild was only to find out at home or the road it is worse than the originals you just pulled out!

My originals went bad and were clicking like you hear on a front wheel drive car. The one aftermarket one I bought I suspected had issues from the beginning, but I broke the shaft right where it comes out of the joint at the differential. Sheared it clean in two. My replacement had been fine as well as the other side I replaced the original with.I have a question for those of you who have broken a CV axle (I haven't). Where do they usually break? Does the shaft itself snap, or does the joint fail? Just curious as to what is the weak link.
Thanks!
We're not starting another oem vs aftermarket debate again.
Really, who gives a shit? Blow your money, I sure as hell don't care. But when I can buy a reman for $60 and it comes with a lifetime warranty, screw oem.
I have 3 hard years on my reman Cardone HD without issue, we'll see how the duralast reman last, but I really don't care cause if they break they will replace them no questions asked.
