How To: Remove Camshaft Pulley Bolt Without Tool

Hi all, I haven’t seen this anywhere on the forums yet but when I was doing my timing belt I needed away to break loose the cam bolts without the tool to hold the pulleys. What I decided to do was use the old timing belt and wrap it around the cam pulley and the center pulley and use vice grips to hold it tight. This works putting the pulleys back on to torque spec also. See the pic, it works great and may help anyone in a pinch.

Good idea, I've never heard of someone getting it off like that. :suspicious:

I used a $12 SST when I did my oil pump and cam seals a month ago, made the job much easier.

Ha! Did the same thing on my 1984 Supra to get the crankshaft pulley loose back in 1987, I think. In that case it was the V-belts that got the vise grips. A challenge, but it worked!

I tried this with mine a while back. Wouldn't budge. I even tried a chain wrench. Still nothing. Hell, getting the crank bolt off was much easier than those suckers. I ended up getting the service tool from a Toyo tech and was able to finish the job.
