HowTo: rear backup camera mod

I like the eBay switch but $28 is a bit rediculous for me to spend for a switch. I do have the relay and socket for it. I assume wire colors are pretty standardized but would appreciate confirmation. Red, Black, Yellow, Blue and White, anyone able to say which color goes where?

CXS, good job, next project for my 4 runner is J A 's Factory Navigation Override and Unlock Bypass Module. I just received mine from him yesterday and will put it in tomorrow. I am also replacing my camera switch with the one used by nefarious. Thanks to all for the help with this, this mod is awesome.

I put a simple toggle switch on the side of the console, I'm not very concerned about style. I would like to aim the camera a bit higher which I think may be easy.

From what you say about aiming your camera I suppose it is at the license plate area. I placed my camera on the rear window air spoiler, in the middle on the spoiler behinf the spoiler tailight, this places the camera gight above the rear window The BEC 108 camera came with a long power cord that reached and plugged into the back of the factory nav unit.

Interesting, I have the stock camera by the license plate as you stated. I had remounted it to a swing-arm with the extra gas, spare etc but found that set-up too inconvenient. Since I have the additional wiring I might try relocating it. Do you have any pics?
Any idea about the fisheye lens? I'm curious if the lend can be changed to eliminate that thus providing a different view.

The camera is easily adjusted and today I shimmed mine to get a longer view which worked just fine. I can now see more with just the top corners of the screen showing the housing while the bottom still catches the receiver. Good enough for me for now. I'll post some pics later, the ones I took with my cheap camera turned out pretty bad so I'll re-do those.

i would like to have a back up camera. is there anyway i can get one put in my 2008 4runner? i would rather have an alpine double din that i could use with a back up camera hooked to it.

EPIC! I was thinking to do this mod only if I could find an OEMish button ( I was going to just get a "FJ factory Fog light button". This is cooler.
All I'd have to do is contact [MENTION=63211]emelianenkov[/MENTION] and get the correct LED color........... :naughty:

OK here we go. Very special thanks to JA for assisting me (via PM) with this.
For this mod I went with a factory parking sensor switch from the FJ or any Toyota that uses it. Think it was like 70 bucks or so. I like the stock look.
I never took pics for a write-up but this mod is super simple and I will just list exactly what I did per JA's instructions.
1) Cut the red/yellow navigation wire located here.
2) Buy switch, extra wire, taps etc... I bought Posi-locks and Posi-taps. Very clean and easy to use.
3) Lengthen and attach both ends of the red/yellow navigation wire you just cut to your switch you bought. Attach the cut end of the nav wire that is closest to the navigation unit side into pin #30 of your switch. Attach the cut end of the nav wire that is closest to vehicle side into pin #87a.
Next, from you switch you bought, run wires from pin #87 and pin #85 to a 12V+ source. I used that accessory harness that is unused floating around in the console near the shifter. Think its for the cigarette lighter accessory package. Nevertheless, tap into an ignition/accessory source (rather than constant) so it will power up when the vehicle is on/accessory mode.
Next, from your switch, run a wire from pin #86 to your ground connection on your activation switch/button. Pin 3 on my toyota switch is ground.
Those 2 red wires you see are from pin #87 and #85 from the switch. They tap into the pink/blue stripe wire from that accessory harness which is 12V+.
The black wire you see is from pin #86 and runs to the 3rd pin of my button/switch ground.
Next, on my button/switch, the first 2 pins 1 and 2 are only for the illumination circuit which allows for the light bulb to be activated when pressed. JA gave me the brilliant idea of just tapping into the same pin wires from an adjacent switch (hill decent control button).
Lastly, pin 6 on my button/switch I tapped into that cigarette accessory harness I was referring to earlier. I tapped a white with black stripe wire which I believe is a 12V+ source.
Thats it! Simple as that. This is not a formal write-up just a simple "let me show you what i did" kind of thing. Let me know if you have any question about what I did. I have a medical background so don't expect me to answer any complex electrical questions.
I use this mod mainly for switching lanes and eliminating blind spots. It is pretty incredible in traffic. Its also good for staring at people behind your Runner.

Thank you soooo much for all the detailed explanations (and the pictures), which make it really easy to understand what we are doing.
I have just received the same OEM parking switch, coming directly from Thailand !! Very nice ! My idea is to activate 4 front parking sensors using the same raisoning (and the same relay+switch), while the backup camera and the backup parking sensors will automatically work when I'm in reverse.
However, the "pig tail" (the white connector/harness to put at the back of the switch, with the wires) wasn't included with the switch... I don't know yet what i'm gonna do, because the switches and connectors you can buy from Totota are smaller : they only have 4 pins (exactly like the DAC switch actually). Whereas this OEM Parking Sensor switch has 5 pins (well, actually only 4 are being used, as you wrote)
Could you tell me where I can get the dedicated pig tail or white connector/harness ?

This white connector was purchased from the toyata parts counter in my area. I simply brought the switch in and the parts dude pulled out his book and turned to the pages that had the whaite connectors and we just matched it based on shape. Was really easy! Sorry but was a while ago so dont have the part number but like i said, was super easy to match.
The pigtails you can find online or better yet, go to a salvage yard and cut a bundle off any switch. Those pigtails are everywhere on pretty much any Toyota in the past 15 years. Think i bought a bundle for like 5 bucks.

While I was playing with the dashboard trim yesterday (to plug the RCA wire for my rear camera), I've noticed the "rear-window" switch has exactly the same shape : there's a white harness/connector at the back, with the same number of pins than the OEM parking switch. I'll ask the parts department of my local Toyota dealer if I can order one. Shouldn't be too expensive.
I really like the stock look as well ! I'll try to find some black matte spray for the shiny USB plugs.
