HVAC off but still getting warm air?

No, the defogger button won't change the temperature setting. The next morning, the car will be a lot colder than 73, so if you press the defogger button, it will blow hot air at the windshield. Note that it won't blow on "High", though, until the engine warms up. That's another thing I should have pointed out.
Remember that when you set a temperature, you're not actually setting the temperature of the air coming out of the ducts. You're setting the temperature you would like it to be in the car, so the computer will turn on heat or A/C as needed to get there.

Thanks.... That works.... & that's what I thought.

I just think a twisty knob thingy would've been better than a tappy tap tap (just tap it in, happy) to get from warm to hot then.

Agreed, and I do use the AUTO function at times, but it doesn't work for all circumstances. Ie: it won't automatically defrost my winshield when I need it to, or switch back to dash vents when I need it to. It's quirky.

Northof49: as evidenced from your post, you have no idea how to read an entire post before passing judgement. My last line in my previous post was the conclusion, not just "SYSTEM SUCKS" without backing up. Now go read it again.

I wasn't trying to be a dick.....just pointing out that if you are hitting any button on the thing 21 times, you're making it harder on yourself than need be.

Sorry if I read your post wrong.....but it quite clearly states, "a system where you need to push a single button 21 times to go from Max Heat to Max AC, or hold the button and wait for the temps to increase s-l-o-w-l-y."

My point was that you don't have to do that.....I never have and live in harsh 4-seasons area.

My temperature setting is always within a degree or 2 depending on personal preference on any given day.....after that I:

1) Punch the Auto button
2) Turn the A/C off (sometimes)
3) Select the air flow

And voila, the system will automatically spew out hot or cold air out the air path you chose until it reaches the desired temp. If it is really cold, it will puke out the hottest air possible at max fan speed. If it's really hot out, it'll do the same with A/C and cold air.

No need to peck away for 2 minutes.....if I had to do that it would drive me nuts too!!

No prob, I accept your apology... heh-heh... j/k... I did learn something new here, but I still think a knob would make it easier. since I choose to fiddle around with the buttons because I'm always changing the air temp and from where it's flowing, so I can be more comfortable!

Problem 1. The HVAC control system adjusts the supply temp (the air that blows out the vents) to keep the sensed cabin temperature at the temp setpoint you select. In manual mode you should be able to have the control loop control for supply temp instead of cabin temp. That would be more like the traditional manual control, which I like.

Problem 2. If you start off with the temp set at 70 (or whatever) and later decide to drop the temp setting to "lo", the system switches to recirc, even when it's 50 deg. outside. That is just plain idiotic.

HVAC system is terribly over-engineered and made more difficult by poor explanations in owners manual. All you need is a fan knob, temperature knob, AC button and knob for vent choice. The 2004 Explorer I traded was the worst vehicle I've owned in 50 years of driving but the HVAC and the radio still beat those on my 2006 Sport.

The 2004 Explorer I traded was the worst vehicle I've owned in 50 years of driving but the HVAC and the radio still beat those on my 2006 Sport.
