Hydraulic Shop Press- 12 Ton vs 20 Ton?

Thanks for the reply.... Im leaning towards trying to ship a 12 ton..... Hopefully it will do the trick

I'm almost ready to shift gears and dig into this project. I did look at my axles and the press today - the biggest issue will absolutely be the height of the press IMO. It may have enough clearance. Looks tight.

Just need to get through this week, may plan on next Saturday to dig into it.

Finally started my rear end rebuild. I pulled it all and am replacing all bushings, bearings and seals.

Short answer is that the 12ton HF press will not work out of the box. However with a relatively simple mod, it will work. I'm glad I was able to use mine.

To pull the bearing, I used the wheel bearing removal tool I bought from donald_the_bonald on ebay (the original design). Truly made this work a no-brainer. Couldn't recommend it enough. I also referenced mtbiketim's excellent videos and the adventuretaco instructional guide. Invaluable references, thanks gents.

Problem: The tool is too wide to fit between the 12ton HF press cross beam.

No matter what you do, it won't fit. One (unacceptable) option would be to cut the width of the tool down. I chose instead to cut a couple of 20" sections of 2"x2" square 12gauge steel tube that I had. No need to weld them together, in fact it was easier with them separate.

It all just fits. You have to make sure the bottle jack is at the top most, etc.

Summary: Using my 12ton HF press with some (light) modification, I was able to press out the ABS ring, bearings, bushings last night for four axles (had extras). :thumb3:

YMMV, depends if you have square tubing available, etc. For me it was "free".

HTH! I need to start a build thread.

Thanks for the update, along with the description of the problem to solve, and the pictures. It is good to know that it will work.

As a side note, when I bought my T4R about 14 years ago, an axle seal was leaking. Somehow, I replaced it with no special tools like this. My memory fails me on what I did, so I have no idea how in TF I did that job without having a tool like this back then.

It is good to now know that if another axle seal, or wheel bearing, goes out, that the HF press I already have (along with the wheel bearing removal tool that I would buy) would make it possible for me to do the job. I bookmarked this thread and the link for the wheel bearing removal tool, for future reference.

Thanks again.

Thanks for confirming that the HF 12-ton shop press would work. I split the cross beam in half and now the bearing tool works just fine.

Thanks a million! I have been depressed looking for this exact answer! Now I have to just get a 12 ton HF press I saw advertised in Marketplace for $75 bucks and change the dammed bearing from my 4Runner!

For forum members close to Cleveland, OH I'll post the results of the bearing change and make available the tool and press at my place, as long as I have the setup available.

Same here. For the first bearing, I stacked 4x4 and 2x4 on either side. Worked well.

But, the second bearing was a good bit tighter. The wood stack was not going to hold. And, they were rolling off toward the outside.
Crazy thing... I happened to have 2 heavy 3x6 box iron beams. But, the press pins were still bending and the beams were spreading apart. So, I used 2 pony clamps to keep the beams in place. This worked really well, and pushed the limit of the 12-ton jack.

The 20 ton press is the way to go. The 12 ton is smaller and harder to use for doing press work on axles.

Since it relates to this subject, here's two modifications I've done to my 20 ton press to improve on its functionality.

I don't remember what I was pressing out, but I had my 12t press fail on me. Scared the crap out of me, just a loud pop and all hell broke loose. The upper crossbar the 4 bolts holes had failed. But this was years ago.

20t is where it's at. Much better to use and use safely.

thanks for the input guys, i will measure the spacing on the adjustable arms to see what space i will have to accommodate the axle tool.
I will be fabricating the axle tool so i will see what I need to modify.
Thanks!

OK so I am gearing up to do this very same job except I also have to replace the drum brake backing plates which cost $112 ea. I have been putting in a ton of research on it and talked to a guy on the Reddit 3G4R sub-reddit about his project. He opted for the 12 ton press and he specifically answered me on it and he said it was more than he would ever use and it obviously worked beautiful for the rear seal/bearing job. Now instead of fabricating the special tool I highly recommend you buy the tool that Duane Bier makes and sells on eBay. I just received mine and it is a seriously nice tool meticulously manufactured. Insider tip I got from Timmy the Toolman's video contact Duane directly via email and you will receive a significant discount on the cost of the tool. I got mine in 3 days I believe. Here is the eBay listing Rear Axle Bearing Puller Toyota 4Runner FJ Lexus GX460/470 Tacoma | eBay and here is Duane's email address [email protected]. Super nice guy too!

I'll disagree, and endorse the previous sentiments. If you are in a position to choose, definitely go with the 20-T. !!

Yes, you can make the 12-T work. I did just that a few posts back. (I also admit that the side that pushed the strength limits of the 12-T was not normal.) But, the 12-T is simply not physically sized well for this work.

Again, other-things-equal... get the 20-T

My comments were in reply to the OP who said that the 20 ton in Canada was prohibitively expensive. So I just wanted him to know that yes the 12 ton has been used for this job and worked fine. YMMV!

If space is a concern in your work area, like it is in mine, then the 12-ton press works, with slight modification.

This so helpful, I wish I could show you guys how to remove that bearing without special tools in less than a minute.

I 2nd this. I purchased the tool and used a 12 ton press and it was perfect, no issues what so ever. Ive done bushings, front and rear wheel bearings and other mis stuff with the 12 ton and it has never strained.
