*I try not to shoot too many of my friends nice guns, for the same reason you stumbled upon after handling that Kimber...they make you want them badly. A Kimber 1911 has been on my wish list for many years.....

Thanks Dave. Between a Kimber and an AR-10 my top two firearm "wants" won't come cheap. I was running around with a grand of spare cash earlier today and thought of going by a gun shop, but made a principal only payment on the mortgage instead. Responsibility..... ugh.

BFAD are those sylvania bulbs holding up? I desperately need to upgrade but overall have not seen good reviews on them. Also, those shots are awesome!

The Silverstars are doing great. I run them in both of my 4Runners, and although the ones in the '01 have only been in for 8k miles, the ones in the '97 have been in for at least 40k miles and they're still going strong. Short version: I wouldn't hesitate to buy them over again.

To echo Fightman, that scenery is top notch. It is as if the 3rd gen 4runner was meant to comb/venture through that type of terrain. Must be nice.

I'm getting ready. We started shopping for all that stuff last weekend. It's definitely nice to live in a state with such varied terrain. Between southern CO and northern NM there's a bit of everything.

Yeah, those are my "Official Garage Cheerleaders". When I get frustrated with something, I just look up there and they cheer me on. I'm still working on teaching them how to get me a beer though.

Nice! I've been looking to get an Estwing, but the sheaths on some are made in Mexico, is yours? I've been making a list of things to buy for the 4runner, checking whether it was made in USA. Like that Sun Lev-O-Gauge(which is made here), and Maglite, Rigid Industries lights, anything. It used to be frustrating finding out something isn't made here, and now I have an obsession, I won't buy something that isn't made here, Germany or Japan, unless it is electronic(then there is usually no other option). Everything I see that I want, I research. I research EVERYTHING: hose, headlights, gloves, clothes, stickers, replacement parts, tools, even LEDs. Is it a good thing to be that obsessed? I started a video series on YouTube a while back to show some products that are made here, to help out the economy. I hope it's been working!

Reminds me of a story my dad told me. He said back in the day my grandfather would drive my great uncle(who had polio) to New Hampshire to visit his son. On the way up, they would leave a 6 pack in a creek they drove by. They would pick it up on the way back and drink it. (Back then drinking and driving wasn't as big a deal according to my dad).

I usually look online, there are a good number of websites that only sell American made stuff, I check them and they usually provide a good amount of clothing that is made here on their websites. One of the companies we order clothing from at the firehouse is Game Sportswear, in their catalogs, as well as online they state which of their products are made here, which definitely narrows down the amount of stuff I have to look into buying, haha.

There's not a whole lot going on w/the '01 lately, besides a lot of time on the open road. I've just been using & enjoying the truck while spending some time with family and fixing up my my Wife's 3rd gen.

I caught it looking good after an easy trail run to the top of the world...

The '01's first trip to "Church". This canyon is where I go for that kind of thing...

Botany lesson for the day... This is Poison Ivy. If you see it, don't touch it.

I decided to push the limits of the '01's mileage per tank, and ended up with these results. This was a mix of driving with 60% of the tank burned on the highway and the rest on forest roads @ speeds < 40mph.

Once you apply the correction factor of 7% for the larger tires, the actual miles traveled are 311. Average MPG on the tank was 18.6. I was also able to determine exactly what my fuel guage is telling me when it reaches various levels of "low". As you can see, I was below the "Empty" line, but I still had @ least 1.28 gallons in the tank (18 gallon tank).

I also got to experiment with some "Rattle Reduction" techniques for the Hi-Lift. Anyone who's every strapped one of these to the outside of their rig should know that the jack rattles like hell on bumpy roads.

+ 1 Bungee Cord.... problem solved.

You have to wrap the cord around the jack in this exact way so that you secure the base, the lift point, and the ratcheting points with one tie. After I wrapped the jack w/the bungee, noise was reduced by about 90%. I was already running a Hi-Lift Poly Handle Isolator, btw.

I added a "Roll Holder", I'll probably cut a roll of paper towels in half and swap to those over the TP for greater versatility.

If you run a CBI, applying some WD-40 to the latching handle's threads greatly reduces the force needed to tighten the swing away, and the force needed to loosen/unscrew the handle. It drips and attracts a little dirt, but it's better than fighting with a super tight latch after a washboard road.

CBI forgot to send me this support, so I called them and they sent it out ASAP, and I installed it. Without this peice, the end of the swing away nearest the latch can vibrate just enough to work the latch loose on trails.

Finally, CBI only installs 4 little bolts on their adjustable height tire carriers. Those 4 little bolts are all that keeps your tire carrier from working loose and falling off @ some point, so I added eight more Grade 8 bolts to help keep the tire carrier where it belongs.

You can see the 4 bolts installed by CBI @ the top/bottom. Notice the short bolts and the tiny amount of threads protruding from the nut.

And the eight additional bolts that I added, along with lock washers. These should ensure that I never lose my tire on the trail/highway. I also used a common metric size bolt, so these can serve as spares in case I need one @ some point.

Aside from that I've got $6k into Baby, Family, and Wife's 4Runner related expenses. That's kept any additional big mods @ bay for the time being. I'll get going on the '01 again soon, but in the meantime I plan to just keep on using it for what it was built to do. :driving:

Thanks man. I wish I had more than pics for this go round, but other things are draining the wallet @ the moment. The Hi-Lift was driving me nuts because I like to drive with the back window down and it was SOOOO noisy... I had to figure something out.
