I found "The One", 2001 Sport Ed. TRD SC'd

:bluejump::fro::tongue::party::surfer:

I've run out of accolades to say, so I'm resorting to responding in icons.

Well, to you I say....:thanks::dammit:

I have one more little thing to post that I worked on today. It's nothing exciting, more like a couple "tips" that might help somebody in the future.

First, my ARB has two shackle mounts on it. Well it just so happens I have two Warn shackles. The problem is that when you put the shackles on the bumper, they slide left and right and generally rattle around. I wanted to sport the shackles on the bumper so I needed to find a way to make a "bushing" to give them a more secure fit. This is what I came up with:

Four large (7/8" ID) flat washers, and two 1" ID (go 7/8" if you can find 'em) nylon washers per shackle...

8e89ac2c.jpg~original

Assemble like so... The nylon washer goes between the shackle and the mount, to prevent metal to metal contact and prevent the shackle from rubbing the powdercoating off the shackle mounts.

ce271011.jpg~original

Installed.... The shackle now fits very snugly and has zero play. It's snug enough that I had to hammer the last washer into place, yet you can still rotate the shackles forward if needed. I could drive down a washboard road doing 50 and it wouldn't move or make peep.

NO, I'm not going to paint them red.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Also, I was reminded the other day that when the rear tires stuff, they rub horribly on one of the bolts on the inner fender...

This is the culprit, you can see the rub marks from the tire...

2bac3a10.jpg~original

With those sharp edges, I figure it's just a matter of time before it starts taking chunks out of the tire...

cc4f51fe.jpg~original

So, I found something better. The replacement bolts have a lower profile, and a curved head to allow the tire to rub across them w/minimal damage.

After... Much better, and my tires will thank me later.

Nice BFAD!!! I just took my D links off last night because of all the noise they make. I've been looking for tubing to put over the bolt but this looks like a good fix.

I still have a sheet or plate metal sound clank on the front drivers side when going over large bumps or pot holes that I'm trying to find.

What size are the bolts for the splash guards???

The bolts are M6 x 1.0... The replacements I got are 16mm and are driven with a 4mm allen key. They cut the profile by about 1/2 compared to the factory hardware.

I got all the stuff for both the D-Rings and replacing the hardware in the wheel well for about $24 @ the Tru-Value on Lomas/San Mateo. I bought them out of the nylon washers & the flat washers though.

Also, I should mention I got some very thin 7/8" ID machine bushings (basically a very thin washer) for adjusting to a perfect fit. I only needed one on the passenger side.

As far as the noise over bumps, take a look at your coils and see if they're missing any paint (Spindle hitting the coil). That's probably not it b/c you're running the toytec setup, but you never know.

Hey BigFish

I am changing my suspension setup within the next few weeks. Going from OME to Tundra TRD coils and Bilstein 5100s, essentially a Sonoran Steel lift like yours. I just finished reading through both yours and Dirtco's threads discussing coil and spindle contact. I want to avoid this altogether as my T4R is my DD. I thought I read that you would be doing a write up on the limit strap install. Could you also please list the exact parts you used when doing this? I see there are a few options on Poly Performance for example, including limit strap lengths. I am a complete newb to the whole limit strap world but they do seem straight forward. I, for one, would appreciate the full details when you do this mod!! Glad to see some thought among members to solve a common problem! Great work BigFish and Dirtco!

Rick,

I'll be doing the same setup that Dirtco has:

Sonoran Steel Limit Strap Kit X 1, $70.00 shipped, which includes:

-Bracketry to weld on frame (clevis mount)
-Longer bolt for lower shock eye
-Spacer for lower shock eye bolt (you can see it in Dirtco's pics)

Dirtco added some additional bracing to the bracket (to make things super beefy, as he always does), you can see it in his photos.

Front Limiting Strap Mounting Kit $64.80 + $5.20 USPS - $70.00 : Sonoran Steel, Sonoran Steel Custom Metal Fabrication L.L.C. Custom Toyota Truck Parts

10" Poly Performance Limit Straps X 2 (Part # PPI-2810-10), $25.00 ea. You can see the 10" note written on the strap in one of Dirtco's photos. I'm 99% sure on the 10" spec, but we should prob. check w/him to make sure.

Poly Performance JEEP/TRUCK & BUGGY*::*Limit Straps*::*Poly Performance Quad Wrapped Ultra Strength Limit Strap - 4X4 Off-Road Parts, JK Synergy Suspension Systems, Fox Racing Shox, Beard, CNC Brakes, Johnny Joints®, Currie Enterprises, Edelbrock, Pi

Synergy Suspension Multi-Strap Clevis Mount X 2 (Part # PPM-3216-01), $25.00 ea.

Poly Performance JEEP/TRUCK & BUGGY*::*Limit Straps*::*Synergy Suspension Multi-Strap Clevis Mount - 4X4 Off-Road Parts, JK Synergy Suspension Systems, Fox Racing Shox, Beard, CNC Brakes, Johnny Joints®, Currie Enterprises, Edelbrock, Pit Bull Tires,

Total Cost: $170.00 +/- (there's some extra shipping costs on the straps/clevis)

My install will be the exact same as Dirtco's, and I'm not sure there's going to be a whole lot to write up. I'll take a bunch of pictures though.

Perfect! Thats already fitting the bill.... I look forward to seeing your pics of the install. Thanks!

The Sonoran Steel kit comes with directions that cover the whole install, it's really pretty easy if you know how to weld (or have a buddy that does).

-Adjusting the straps is a little time consuming, just make sure to follow the directions and lower the vehicle when adjusting the clevis.

-When you re-torque lower strut bolts the limit straps want to spin out of location. I had to wedge whatever I could find between the strap and truck to hold the lower metal part of the strap in place.

If you guys have any questions about the install just let me know!

Really not much of an update, but I wanted to put a placemarker in here because I finally fleshed out my recovery gear...

As of today, this is what I'm rolling with in the '01. I need to add a pry bar and a 35mm socket for changing out CV's, but otherwise, I'm almost done w/the tool kit & recovery gear... BTW, all of this fits cleanly inside the rear cargo box & the factory cargo compartment on the passenger side.

3" x 30ft Snatch Strap
4" x 20ft Tree Strap
3 X 3/4" D-Ring Shackles
10 ft. 5/16" Grade 7 Choker Chain w/Hooks
75' of 3/8" Polyester Rope, 300lb WLL
Snatch Block (17,600lbs capacity)
Leather Gloves
Portable Air Compressor
Heavy Duty 8GA Jumper Cables
Lots of Bungee Cords
3D LED Maglight
Extra D-Cell Batteries
2A Mini LED Maglight
3X Road Flares
First Aid Kit
Wool Blanket
Duct Tape & Electrical Tape
Zip Ties
5' of 1/8", 1/4", and 3/8" ID vacuum tubing
Fire Extinguisher
Extra Fuses
Extra Supercharger Belt, P/S Belt, A/C Belt
Gerber NATO Folding Shovel
14" Hatchet
Full Size Axe
Tools to handle most common problems: (3/8" Ratchet, Universal Joint, 3" extension, 10mm-18mm Sockets [deep & regular], 6mm-19mm Combination Wrenches, Flathead & Phillips Screwdrivers, 8" Crescent Wrench, Vice Grip Pliers)

I should also mention that last Thursday I sold my 1987 Supra Turbo for $2,300. I have specifically set that money aside for taking care of some major mods on the '01 that I've been eyeballing for a LONG time. So there will be real updates soon.

Things you can do with $2300 alloted for the 4runner...I can only imagine!

Great list of recovery supplies there, too!

Last week I was able to knock out a couple maintenance issues on the '01. Namely the Supercharger Belt that was squealing like a pig, and the Transfer Case Output Seal that was leaking.

With those two issues out of the way, I had no excuse not to get the '01 out on the open road again, so we took it on ski trip up to Wolf Creek, CO. We stayed on the South Fork side, so there was some extra mileage. The last day we went up to Creede to check out the Rio Grande, then back to ABQ.

Overall, we put about 500 miles on the '01 and it averaged 19 mpg over the entire trip running the URD controller. Elevations ranged from 5,200 feet to 10,300. Not too bad for a lifted rig w/33's and a superchager, IMO.

There was no off-roading on this trip... just logging some miles and getting to know the URD kit a little better. The URD box behaves much differently from the TRD 7th controller, which I learned on this trip. The URD box runs a good bit richer in closed loop, thanks to the AFR calibrator, and it runs a bit leaner in open loop (when using the startup map).

I've got it pretty nailed down now as to where it needs to have fuel added/removed. It's pretty amazing to feel the power increase substantially when the ECU goes from closed loop to open loop and the AFR's go from 13.5 to around 12.0... there is a big surge there. I really need to tune this thing already.

Some pics....

Nice BigFish! Great mountain, I have always loved Wolf Creek. Snow decent already?? I am mountain bound after Thanksgiving, and this was a perfect motivator for me!

42 inches @ the summit, and 38 inches midway, 100+ inches YTD. There are a few rocks sticking out here and there, and lots of smaller trees, but the snow was nice and soft. No ice, not even on the groomers.

I tend to ride in the trees alot, and on the steeps, so I was in powder all day. There were a couple spots where it was so fluffy it was hard to get up if you took a spill. Got some fresh lines in too.

I'm glad the pics got you motivated man!! Get out there and shred. We may go back the weekend after TG, but I can't wait for NM to get some snow so I don't have to drive so far.

Great pics man! We've started to get some snow....but only about 1/2" the other day....and it's already gone! Who says Canada is the land of Ice and Snow??!! lol! Seems like you folks are getting alot more than me right now.....(watch my town get murdered with a crazy snowfall now...lol)

Sounds like you ride hard, as do I. We should put together a t4r riding weekend. Colorado or NM...Colorado has better snow!! ;)
