Well, since I got the Amazon kit, I didn't use the Toyota parts numbers, but this is what I had:

KIT,REPAIR SERVICE
Part NO.: 28226-64200
Replaced By:28226-22050

KIT, REPAIR, SERVICE
Part NO.: 28226-74070

PLUNGER, MAGNET SWIT
Part NO.: 28235-55050

This was off both toyodiy and toyotapartszone.com using my VIN. I'm curious why they don't match. Toyotapartszone says your plunger is no fit for my VIN and has no info on your contact part numbers. If you're curious, try your VIN here:

Maybe our trucks are different, but I didn't think so. It's always possible Toyota has updated the part numbers and the sites I use have not kept pace with the dealers. toyodiy is frequently out-of-date on p/n's, but I thought toyotapartszone was current.

So I'm still somewhat confused. Did you diagnose your problem down to the starter contacts? Maybe I missed that somewhere. The title says I hope this isn't what I think it is, then asks about starter contacts. In the scheme of things starter contacts are one of the easier maintenance items on a 3rd gen. If I had starting issues I'd be worried about much bigger issues. Hopefully it's just the contacts and you got off easy. Maybe it wasn't the contacts and the starter just got wet.

What other things have you checked to be possible sources?

well i had just replaced my yellow top, and was hoping it wasnt that. and i remember reading all the horror threads on how much of a PITA starters were to remove, as well as hearing it personally from a couple local guys who had done it... so i was thinking this was gonna be a much bigger job that it is/was. im still waiting on the plunger, should be right now actually, to put everything back together.
once i pulled everything apart and looked at the contacts and the plunger, yeah i have a lot of wear on them. i took the entire starter apart including the motor, and cleaned everything up, used two cans of lectra-motive cleaner on it, put new grease on the bearings, and gears, new sealant on the O-rings for the motor(you cant get the O-rings by themselves), and reassembled everything. we shall see how it works. if i still have a "click" when i go to start then ill have to look at other options -all fuses are good and wires were tight

OK. Water in the starter is no good so it sounds like you gave it a good cleaning plus caught up on contact maintenance.

no dice, all back together and still just a good click.

WTF!

back to square one, one possibility eliminated.

That blows. Knowing you, I'm sure you have checked your positive cable to battery connection and that there is 12V+ at that bolt-on connection to the starter. I also assume you are sure that your crank is not frozen. At that point, I would pull the starter but leave it in place and connected but free of the engine. If the starter motor turns outside the engine, that says Bendix to me. If no turn, then:

...or try to find a known good starter you can borrow. Good luck.

so i went back and started double checking everything, i mean everything, i was pulling wires(gently but firmly), and physically checking every terminal and connector, taking it apart and wire brushing it, then adding dielectric grease to it and putting it back together, then test again for each part/connection, got to the alternator, and boom, the power wire coming off the alt was the issue, good a tight, but bad connection...

im gonna guess this was my issue all along, the starter contacts did not look bad at all, i mean there was wear, but much less than ones ive seen on here. and the head parts guy at the dealer i use(he knows his stuff, and been working on cars many years -has a built supra and has been on race teams ect) said he figured i only had 40-50k mi on my starter contacts, well i know i got at least 60k, so that tells me they didnt look bad to him either. so im guessing i didnt have bad starter contacts at all, it was just the alt contact that was bad. but i got a fresh starter out of the deal.
