I just realized what Toyota is Doing!

Exactly. These people just want to b*tch.

Really can't understand what all the complaining is about. Those complaining may have a point if they were referring to a $70k+ vehicle, but come on, this is a $40k suv. I have 33k miles on mine with zero problems, not even a rattle (Which is pretty amazing for a truck based vehicle). I have zero problems with the interior, but then again I use a Weather tech mats/Husky liner in the cargo area. The 5th gen is the best vehicle I have ever owned.

Not *****ing, just making an observation. My 4r has not held up as well as my past Toyota. I think Toyota has made a calculated decision to lower material standards in order to better compete. They still make a better car than anyone else.....just not as good as they used to be.

To act like I have no reason to talk when I have personally put several hundred thousand miles on Toyota products just fanboyism.

heh. Never ceases to amaze me here when forum regulars try to shut down or shut out legitimate complaints or opinions here.

The 4Runner is good, but it's far from great IMO. Like JohnnyT said, there are some here that have lowered their expectations to fit or meet what the 4Runner does fulfill. For the other folks here (myself included)...Using this forum to talk (or b-tch as some have referred to it as...) about the 4Runner's shortcomings is all that we're doing. Please don't take it so personal.

Everybody have different expectations. I for instance gladly read about all 4Runner issues but first few weeks I read this forum after owning 4 Fords I was completely amazed by people observations. What was worrying me in my past vehicles are strange sounds from suspension, loud squeaks going over speed bump, some rattles from underneath, check engine light, small leaks and stuff like that. I think that if I didn't read this forum I would never noticed most of the stuff people here are complaining about. But of course I never had any 4Runners before - so if people say so I suppose quality is deteriorating as for almost everything nowadays ; )

I always thought the trunk carpet in all the 4runners I've owned (2nd and 3rd gens and now a 5th) was just tucked under the plastic side panels?

Ive had small issues with every vehicle...my 2nd gen's automatic antenna use to break if I didn't keep it greased. I think I went through 5 antennas during the life of the vehicle. The rear wiper used to get stuck and the mechanism controlling it would cause my rear dome light to pop out of it housing. The blue steering wheel started to rub off on my hands at about 75K miles. One of my 3rd gens had cloth seats which started deteriorating badly after about 50K miles. The clear plastic on the gear shifter cracked at around the same time. Just little things, but when it came down to it, I took all three vehicles over 100K miles and got great resale value.

This actually makes me feel better. I'd like to know that this little stuff is normal and not necessarily and indicator of an inferior vehicle. If it's just the little stuff, I'm OK. I'm just worried it might progress to major things down the road. Maybe my Tacoma (120k miles), my Dad's 4runner (112k miles), and my wife's Highlander (70k miles) with no problems or defects were better than average performers even for Toyota.

Since we're bringing up little imperfect things. My 3rd gen's (97) antenna has not worked for probably 4 years now. I just leave it up and when I go wheeling i puch it down. No biggy. I also relaced the center console cover as my old one cracked after 10 years. bought a replacement on E-Bay. Also had to have my brake master cylinder replaced after 10 years and my power steering lines after 14 years. Hey but again 15 years of ownership and 167,000 miles it's still going strong.

Like JohnnyT said, there are some here that have lowered their expectations to fit or meet what the 4Runner does fulfill.

I didn't lower my expectations, I just met the reality.

I know you can get more for your money (i.e. Grand Cherokee). Probably the closest competitor to the 4R when it comes to domestics. You'll get a lot more creature comforts with 40k. You'll get similar, if not better, off road capability. It will go to the grocery store just as well. But, when it comes to reliability, you won't find the GC to have great resale value. So, while it's true, we've got tinny doors, hazy headlights, annoying carpet, and a couple other little things... I would never own a Chrysler product and their plethora of major problems.

Exactly the point of my OP. I might not like the little flaws, but what the hell am I gonna do about it?

Oh, but don't forget the noisy brake pedal!! ;)

I agree for the most part of what you're saying in comparison to other vehicles in the same price range....but I was expecting a bit more out of my Limited with ride comfort and interior noise. There are some other small tidbits that are worth noting, and I think the OP did have a point in regard to the 4R being the best vehicle in its class...allowing Toyota to take some shortcuts with quality.

I find some of the responses on here to be a bit unjustified when someone makes a gripe...and it seems to be the same regulars that like to gangbang on the same types of posts.

Make yourself feel even better and do what JohnnyT recommended - look through the autotrader ads... the resale value is phenomenal compared to most SUVs.
**And of side note: extremely funny a guy who loathes 5th gens looks at them on autotrader

Well, angry this morning. I was cleaning out my truck last night and the Carpet in the rear cargo area began to pull-up in several new areas. I had a problem with it pulling up near the front a few months ago. Now it's along the sides and back. It's almost looks like its not even secured, just kind of tucked-in under the plastic side panels.

So, now my 34,000 miles truck has hazy headlights (that the dealer is being complete a**holes about fixing), a carpet that's coming up in the trunk and beginning to look prematurely worn in the front footwells IMO, and my rear hatch weather-stripping pulled off a week ago.

Now, I know that carpet and weather stripping is not a huge deal. But this is not what I expect or have experienced in the past from Toyota, and I'm disappointed.....heart-broken even, as I'm a huge Toyota truck fan. So, I've decided to start thinking about ditching the 4runner before things get worse. I'm sure it would last a few more years, but in what condition?

I started to think about what else to buy and realized THERE ARE NO ALTERNATIVES! Everyone else has built trucks this way for years and Toyota has just lowered their standards and started playing down to their competition. Why should they put so much effort into building a product that can last for 10-20 years when everyone else is building disposable cars? Besides, most people buy a new car every 3-5 years anyway. But I don't want to do that. I want to keep mine for a very long time. Unfortunately, I can't think of another company that builds a high-quality off road capable SUV that's still reasonably comfortable for a family. The best I can think to do is look for a used Toyota......you know, from the good old days when you could drive your Toyota truck forever.

In my 30+ years of working on vehicles I have never seen carpet glued down and know for a fact that 3rd and 4th Gens are not.The panels always hold them down as they are form fitted so no need for glue.In assembly, the carpet and headliner goes in right after the wiring and then the seats, panels ect. overlapping from the top down.

The vast majority of people use floor mats and cargo mats or liners . I do on mine and is almost 3 yrs old/50k+ miles with 2 teenagers and a 100lb dog with bear claws and mine is holding up fine as expected.Just like my 4th Gen carpet that I owned for 5 years and my xGF's 3rd Gen that she's owned for 15 years and I maintain. I just wish it wasn't black as black shows dirt and lint too much!

IMO....The seals are very high quality and are all held in by channels, clips or are form fitted and are not glued in either. That's the sign of quality BTW as the cheaper way is to have them glued on(bad idea as they always come loose)as it cost more to put the channels in the body and doors. On the hatch ,they are better to come loose on the sides rather then rip and tear if something being loaded catches them and can easily put back in the channel.

The headlight fogging and early lumbar supports were legit problems and are taken care of on TSB's.
Also ,they did have a problem on 2010 TE rear door seals as they come loose easily from the channel and they changed to a new design in 2011 with 3 fasteners holding them instead of the 2 in 2010's. I have the old style and used a dab of RTV to secure them.

As for cost cutting to save weight...Go figure...5th Gen 4Runners weigh 2-300 lbs more then 4th Gen 4Runners because they improved on the things that were weak spots of 4th Gens. Per Toyota...Extensive frame and body reinforcements with braces have been added, using high-tensile strength materials, reworked engine mounts and a completely new and much stronger rear differential to name a few were added in 2010 .These are things that are known weak spots on 4th Gens. Those are the things that should matter!Don't get me started on 3rd Gens as I have maintained one of those too for the last 100k miles. Great truck too but FAR from perfect! Gave up on that antenna a few years back!

Never ceases to amaze me that people think this is the Toyota complaint dept. and think we designed and sold it to them.

This isn't the Toyota complaint dept........this is............Toyota Help

Really, who would have guessed there would be a bunch of Toyota 5th Gen 4Runner enthusiast and fanboys on a 5th Gen 4Runner subforum! I'll defend mine to the death because IMO it's the best your going to get in a $40k full frame 4x4 SUV in this size that is reliable and is offroad capable ,second to none. Is it perfect? No ,but as I said,IT IS THE BEST!

Like he said?JohnnysteroidT is clueless about 5th Gens except for his admitted 20 minutes looking at one and yet he thinks he knows everything about them. He doesn't even work on his own truck to even change his oil and just jumps on the hater bandwagon every chance he gets. Text book definition of a jealous troll that polishes!

No one said that.

People like to discuss things on a auto discussion board...including things they don't like.

heh. You're logic is...if it's the best, then don't complain about it. I really like your enthusiasm, but seriously...the 4R is not perfect.

Quality costs more, plain and simple. Everyone will have their own definition of "quality" but to me quality is a graduated measure vs. cost and quality is a combination of comfort, features and reliability.

Random side-note:

Lesson in Quality...for anyone that knows how to read take a minute and read "The Zen and Art of Motorcycle Maintenance"

Costco

Not to post OT but peeps were mentioning Costco i thought i would share.
I definitely have a problem with Costco. I love it and hate it. Today for example i went in to get a new battery for my Tahoe for $75 and lunch. good deal for a new battery. But.... I ended up spending $1500 :happens:

It went down like this, i wanted to upgrade my tires and i just went to chat with the tire dude, one thing lead to another. And i bought some BFG AT TA KO's for my 2011 Trail. I knew i wanted them but Costco's evil ways got me to purchases them. I guess its for the best and now i need to sell my Dunlops with 18k miles on them. Ohh yeah i also bought a 27 inch computer monitor.

Pack to the OP poster, i actually had a serious problem with my 4R with one of the manifold seals going bad and dripping oil on the ground and smoking on the exhaust. Took Toyota 9 days to fix it while i mobbed around in a Prius. I haven't had any other problems and am now at 18K miles but i feel buying the 8 year/120K warranty was a good idea after that seal broke.

Even with this minor issue i still love my 4R and really couldn't see my self driving anything else(Except the Suby STI Sedan). I thought about the new Jeep Grand Cherokee while shopping around but give that car a few years and i bet there will be a whole host of problems. Thats why i ended up with the 4R.

My 2012 TE came with a nationwide lifetime powertrain warranty. As long as it is dependable, the small problems are no big deal. I saw this a lot with my Tacoma and on TacomaWorld. Most people that have these vehicles and visits the forums regularly are generally more technical and take more pride in the vehicle. I think this causes a little hypersensitivity and higher expectations for perfection. If Yota were to make all the changes in quality and options that we wish for, they would price themselves out of the market and the only people buying them would be prople like us, which in the big picture is a small fraction of the whole. These are tough vehicles, maybe not built like they used to be, but what is? Got to stay competitive or they won't sell.

Buy a Subaru! Just kidding.

The bottom line is that 4runners, at least b/w 4th gen & 5th gen, have remained in the same price bracket. You guys demanded a better 4wd system, stronger frame, etc....well, none of that is free. There must be compromises made to keep the price the same. Remember, at the same time, US Dollar is losing value. Economy is in the ****hole. Competition is doing the same thing to make products cheaper (or at least keep at same level).

Result? Toyota cheapened some stuff on the 5th gen (mostly interior) while making MAJOR advances in other parts that mattered down the road...or at least, keep their reputation good for no major breakdown. I am sure that is why Toyota did not make major changes to the engine...just tweaking it for bit more power. The V6 is proven...why make another engine with the limited budget? They added rear locker for off-road enthusiasts...along with KDSS and CRAWL (for beginners). Yes, they did take away full-time 4wd in certain models to keep costs low. But, without KDSS & locker, Toyota was able to keep XREAS and full time system in the Limited. It's all about cost and budgeting. They made the frame stronger. Would you rather have your frame cracked like BlairB's 4th gen??

Now, if Toyota had increase the 4runner's price bracket to Lexus GX460, then yeah, i agree completely! Let's take an example. Toyota Land Cruiser 200 (2008-up) went up in price bracket majorly over the TLC100 series. Top of the line price went from $55k to now $80k+!! Yet, as you have seen, do the changes reflect the $25k+?? There were definite improvement...but $25,000+?? Horrible fake wood! Toyota was able to improve the 5th gen (over the 4th gen) in a few critical places while keeping price the same (more or less)! (Note, the changes are not that far off from what Toyota did to the TLC200.) That is respectable IMO! :driving:

When I bought my 07 Pilot

Hondas...great cars...bad transmissions! My brother's '08 Ody tranny failed at 60k miles. Lets just hope that the new 6-speed auto tranny (a brand new design) will fare better.

As a 4th gen owner I can attest to their failing quailty. 50,000 miles and have had 2 front calipers, evaporating paint on every exterior plastic piece, super thin paint on whole exterior, cracked dash board, broken a/c, and a few misc sensors including one new gas tank that was quoted as $400 but luckily self corrected after 5,000 miles.

The ole grey mare just aint what she used to be. My expectation was ZERO problems for at least 75k miles.

Do I still love it? Yah, but the love is fading. In ten years we will all have Kias and Hyundais I fear...

you might have a kia or hyundai.... but I will replace my vehicle every year if need be in order to keep my man card
