I made a rookie mistake today!!!

My battery died on my 4runner and when I used my girlfriends car to jump it, well I was not paying attention and just attached the cables to the wrong posts. I changed out two fuses under the hood but the rest look good. I went to start it and it only dings from the keys being in the ignition, it has no dash lights and wont even try to roll over what so ever. What can I check to fix this problem? I know you think what a DUMBASS... But my wires for my negative are red and the ones for the positive are black, I bought it that way....:withstupid::withstupid:

what model year do you have? Is it the newer ones with the chip in the key? If it is you might have "de-programmed" the key.

recheck your fuses and give the cables from the battery a quick look make sure they did not melt the insulation and are cause a short somewhere between batt and fuse box

It is a 95,automatic,3.0, and it is not going into drive when I turn the key. I am pretty sure it should go into drive even with no power when the key is turned. Does that mean something may be wrong with the ignition, even though it does ding when the key is in?

check the 120amp alternator maxi fuse in the main junction block under the hood. it is bolted into the fuse block.

I would have guessed main fuse also. You're sure the main fuse didn't blow?

The main fuse did blow, I did not look close enough. So that makes three fuses blown just in the fuse box under the hood. 2 2O amp fuses and 1 80 amp alternator fuse later she is running and I am back in business. Thanks for the help man. I am glad I double checked because I would have been at this shit all day. It could have been way worse, I am just glad it was a cheap fix!!!!!!!!

The main fuse did blow, I did not look close enough. So that makes three fuses blown just in the fuse box under the hood. 2 2O amp fuses and 1 80 amp alternator fuse later she is running and I am back in business. Thanks for the help man. Glad it worked out for you. You might, just might, want to get the right color battery wires - just in case...

I would try a hard reset on the battery first. Then maybe check all your fuses. Especially the computer fuse! That could be a pain to change

Don’t feel too bad. I’ve done this before too. In my case both wires were red. I was lucky and it just sparked at me.

I remember being in high school walking home past the student parking lot. 4 of the “nerd” dudes were trying to jump a car...the must have attempted to connect them wrong half a dozen times, each attempt being met with sparks. One of them figured it out finely. These are smart “I do calculus for fun during lunch” dudes. If they can fudge it up so can I.
