I made some rear bump stops. what do you think?

I made some rubber bump stops for my truck and it ended up turning out nice after a few months of R&D.

I made these because I wasn't happy with the available aftermarket bump stops and I felt that I could do better. I've worked in the rubber and plastics industry for many years. Looks like after many hours of R&D and several heavy footed T4R members that helped me with all the testing I now have a production version of both Front and Rear bump stops for 3rd Gen 4Runners.

Here was my very first bump stop sitting next to a Oldsmobile brevada bump stop and a stock rear 3rd gen 4runner bump.


This is what I ended up with after a little R&D. The 5.25" version for all lifts of 2"+.


3.25" version for stock height trucks or mild lifts up to 2".


Front V2 Front bump stop. cast in place metal washer to prevent any separation and a 3/16" steel plate at the base for support.


Rear 5.25" version compressed

Thank You JZiggy! I 3D designed it and then printed it out. I cleaned up my print a bit and made a mold so I can cast rubber.

For the Durometer, I made an educated guess.. I work with rubbers and plastics every day so Im pretty familiar with whats, what.

I hope to head out this weekend and test them out. My original set I made were slightly too soft, so this is round 2.

Some time ago I installed Timbrens as a bumpstop. I also have airbags so they probably aren't really necessary, but I installed them high up assuming they would be a gentler bump stop than the factory ones anyway. So far so good

Whats the length of those Timberns Ziggy? Can you measure them for me.

Do you have any rubbing issues at full flex with the tires in the wheel well?

Very nice work! I have the Bravada/Jimmy bump stops in the rear of my Runner. I'm surprised to hear that so many people experience these crumbling. Mine can hold the full weight of the vehicle without much deflection at all (or, at least they could 2 years ago). You can see a photo in my build thread. I hope they stay that way.

Went out for a bit for a quick test this morning before heading to the off road Expo. the bumps hold the weight of the truck and has just enough flex.

Before I installed these the inside of my tire rubbed on the wheel well and gas fill tube. I didn't have that problem today.

Just had a look at the superbumps. I think we can do much better than that. Wheelers say the superbumps are made of foam. Foam sucks.

We can make some out of rubber. Much stronger and more options available such as the durometer (firm/soft) and other good stuff.

Does anyone have the dimensions of the superbumps? Or dimensions of what the front bump stop should be?

Help me get some info on this and I'll send out the first prototype for you to test.

I know someone who had the superbumps. Let's see if he'll chime in and give some ideas.

Paging [MENTION=118730]AssBurns[/MENTION]. Come to think of it I believe [MENTION=116387]Unner[/MENTION] is running them as well.

First thing is to find out what size bolt the stock ones use. I can pull one of mine tomorrow and verify that.

I would think making them 1.5" longer then the stock bumps would work as long as they where made from a pretty soft material. Then you could leave one of the stock bumps in place to act as "reserve" stop. This is just me thinking off the top of my head but I like where it's going.

Hey Sleepy, Yup those are the right ones.

If you can just get me some dimensions is all I need. I dont need the actual superbumps. Mainly I'm looking for some rough dimensions just so I have something to start with design wise. If someone could even chime in with what they think the dimensions should be is enough to get started.

I have my factory front bump stops as a reference. I'm not sure how much taller they need to be. I might just pull my front strut and max the suspension stroke to see what the height needs to be
