i really did it now... help! runs terrible 30mph and under!

I would rule out the EGR seems to be worknig, Your problem lies in the throttle or the MAF. Let the mechanic take a look at it first before going and spending more money. See what he has to say.

Once you fix that problem. change out your plugs and work on the fuel filter and tire pressure is right. your truck should ride much better.

I changed my plugs out just a week ago and I got 315 miles on a tank of 87:D new/gapped plugs do wonders I promise.

what are ways that work to depressurize the fuel system for changing the fuel filter? keep in mind, i cant really start it... i can, but it wont run for long.

finally got one of my well-knowledged friends to look at it today... only i tried to change the plugs out before he came. tried installing that blasted one first... dropped the new plug. fumbled for 45 mins trying to find it. finally got it. tried the hose trick i've heard about to get them started... wasnt working and i ended up dropping the second one. this time, it took me probly an hour to find it and could only reach the tip. tried grabbing it with the rubber hose, and now i can only hear it. dont really know where it is, definately cant feel it. makes me sick. anyway, i have 5 plugs changed out (yeah, i did get that back one... left the front drivers one). will post the pics of the 5 i got out in a little bit. and, no, changing those didnt solve anything as far as my problem goes.

gonna have a friend check it out tomorrow afternoon. maybe call my other friend to come look at it, too. if they cant come up with anything, i'll call that mechanic and see if he does house calls.

plugs!

yeah, i know it's kinda blurry, but it's hard with a webcam. very carbon-deposited, but the gaps i checked on two of em were pretty close to being right.
there's only 5 cuz i dropped one of the new ones and lost it, so i'm going to have to buy ANOTHER one i cant really afford, yet cant afford not to buy it.

Which plug were you changing out that fell? They make little telescoping magnetic antenna to get things like that. Got mine at autozone for like $2

The plugs are not the problem with the truck now. the poor running yes, before you started doing things.

What was the gap when you checked the old ones?

I got like 0.040:eek: should be 0.031 ins.

You did gap the new ones right? mine had to be.

Keep us updated about you Maf and throttle.

You don't need to depressure the fuel filter. Did you read my write up? Just follow that and you will be fine. If you need pic's I still should have them.

the bastard rear passenger one (#5?). where it's at, i dont know if i could get one of those magnets in there. i've got a few. thought about trying it, but still didnt wanna mess stuff up.
oh well, i ended up spending $8 on another pair of plugs cuz they didnt sell them individually. i was going to post a pic of the last plug (#2), which had far more carbon deposits and maybe some oil, too, but i forgot it at my folks' place. and it did turn over quite a bit better after i put that last one in! but still no cigar.

i have the wire-type gauge, and .035 barely fit, so i believe they stayed pretty good.
i got the bosch platinums, which say on the package that they dont need to be gapped, so i didnt bother.

yeah, i'm going to go ahead and get the MAF i found. i think the throttle should be ok as-is.
also found out another code is being put up on diagnostics... code 14... ignition system. dont really know how to properly work the ohmmeter for things like that, but i took it to the auto parts store to see if they knew. yeah, they knew more than i did, but still didnt know much. current was going through, but not nearly enough. however, who knows if they had it hooked up right, either? and i dont know if it's the coil or the igniter, either, so it looks like i'm stuck getting both. new cost on those 3 things (MAF included) is about $500. found some used ignition modules for as little as $50, but also found some on ebay for less than that. i think ebay is probly the best route to go, seeing as the cheaper modules from salvage lots are a ways away and would need shipping costs added. either way, i have to wait a week or so to get it in the mail. might as well go the cheaper route.
whole thing may end up costing me under $100 for parts (to fix the problem), but i already spent close to $40 for plugs and $15 for a distributor cap. wires are going to have to come soon, probably, an oil change, and front brakes/rotor resurfacing are soon required!
spendy!

i read your writeup... printed it out, too, to have it with me when i did it. on my last car, you couldnt get the filter off without depressurizing the system first. there would always be so much pressure keeping the filter in so you couldnt turn the nuts. according to doing these before, the problems i'm having seem like it's still got pressure in the system that needs to be relieved before the nuts are able to be turned.
i dunno. i should probably have someone do that for me so i dont wreck anything... and have to pay for it myself. i already rubbed off some of the corners of the nuts.

once again, thanks to everyone who is trying to help me!

bought a used igniter and coil on ebay; shipped for $30. got it yesterday.
it's not throwing up code 14 anymore, but still code 31... and still not running. yes, it starts better, but it's still not running.

i think tomorrow i'm going to go buy that MAF i found. i mean, it's still putting up the code 31 for the air flow, so that's the only other thing it could be, right?

i have a friend getting pissed at me and tells me that i should just go and pay someone to fix it cuz that way i'm not spending useless money on something that might not be the problem... especially when i dont even have the problem pinpointed out yet. i dunno. i've had a few hobbyist mechanics come out and even a real mechanic look it over and they're pretty much in the same view as i am. sure, they know more about the stuff and what might cause it and what effects things might have, but theyre pretty much telling me to do what i'm already doing.

if it's not the MAF, though, i'm going to be completely lost.

HALLELUJAH, GOD ALMIGHTY! SHE RUNS!!!!:driving:
:bouncy2:

it was the MAF! ...like i thought all along!

when i first started it, quite a bit of white smoke came out of the exhaust for a long while. oil, i'm assuming. after i let it warm up and drove it around for awhile, it wasnt doing that anymore. think it's anything i need to be concerned about, or maybe it's a brief side effect from changing some of the parts?

still somewhat concerned on acceleration, but i'll get the fuel filter changed and if it still doesnt seem what it should be, i shall post a new thread.

THANKS EVERYONE FOR ALL YOUR HELP! IT'S MUCH APPRECIATED!

Lesson learned don't spray oil on things for the hell of it:D

I would pull a easy plug to get too and just for sure check the gap to make sure it's right I know the box said they don't need to be gapped but for peace of mind I would.

If they are not gapped right you might be in a loop again trying to figure out why you have done all this stuff and the truck still runs poor.

just my .02

If you need pic's for your fuel filter let me know.
