I wonder why Toyota setup the 5th gen ATRAC activation this way

I purchased a 2008 FJ trail team for my daughter a while back. We have not taken it offroad yet since most of the trails around here are a bit too much for a stock vehicle and I have not decided if I'm willing to let her drive a lifted truck yet (although that is what she wants)

Anyway, I was out exercising the 4wd, locker.. in it tonight just to keep things functioning and realized the ATRAC in that model works exactly like it should.

The switch is a toggle push button. Once you set it, every time the truck is put in 4lo ATRAC is automatically turned on. Which seems logical. You can still turn it off, but you get to choose your default mode.

On the 5th gens.. it is a momentary switch and it has to be re-enabled every time you turn the truck off or go in and out of 4lo. Can't tell you how many times I've had to say "do you have your ATRAC on".

That is very strange the 5th gens operate that way. I had a 2nd gen Tacoma that operated the same as your FJ.

I had an 07 that I added the switch to myself to enable ATRAC (cheap upgrade, lol) and noticed the same thing transitioning to the 5th gen.

interesting. the rear diff switch is set up that way, which seem backwards to me...

Wonder if the switches are interchangeable (diff and atrac) or if you can use the atrac switch from the FJ in the 5th gen.

I doubt you could swap it out. Typically, a momentary switch is designed in to the control module itself.

I'm wondering if the 10+ FJs are like the 5th gen. I've never really paid any attention to it.

I had a 2011 FJ, and if I remember correctly ATRAC would default off. I added the switch like [MENTION=92049]LandCruiser[/MENTION] as mine did not come from the factory with it.

I can see why it might as well default on, since there is no reason for it not to be. But at the same time, I only use the A-TRAC maybe 1/5 times I'm in 4L. Most of the time I use 4L for speed control, not because I'm stuck or in a situation where I know I'll need the locker/A-TRAC. Plus I've always been the type to see what I can get myself into before I really need the locker or A-TRAC. Next time I go wheeling with my buddy(Taco TRDP), I'll have to if the system is setup 4R or FJ style.
