I'm still really confused why everyone keeps replacing the lifetime filters in the first place. Only time I have ever needed to even crack those loose was to verify that the tank was empty when the fuel gauge screwed up once.
Maybe if you cut up a filter that has been used for while you'll see why!
Mine stripped I'll probably end up doing this myself. Thanks for the great Idea.Just for future reference ,here's what I did with a stripped nut.

Thats good advice. Thanks.Don't hold your breath but if I get time I'll crack my fuel lines open tomorrow and drain a bit of fuel out of my 215k old filter. If you are getting that much contamination into the filter then I hope you have dropped the tank to inspect it for debris and to replace the pre filter on the pump itself. That is far from normal. By the way where do you buy fuel so I know to stay away from there.
