If you have driven your SR5 on the Beach or in the Sand......

We don't live in a coastal city however my wife's from one and we visit often. Every time we go down we hit the beach too. Stock the 4runner performs excellent. Just Air down the tires. I have since done some upgrades and now it exceeds my previous experiences. Here are some pics


This one is about 10 Miles out from end of paved road on South Padre Island



This one is about 15-20Miles out after some new wide wheels and tires installed with lift

....... I could really use some personal feedback today before 4PM EST concerning how well the 4WD system works in sandy beach conditions. I am so close to pulling the trigger on the purchase of a used 2012 SR5 with leather and nav I can almost taste the payments! I know it is last minute to ask for feedback but I have last minute jitters on making this purchase. :scared: Beach duty in the Outer Banks of NC and family hauling will be this runners sole purpose in life!

Sorry I'm late responding - sad state of affairs when your job interferes with your hobbies...

Have no worries, the SR5 4wd system works wonderful in the sand. Airing down is really all you need to do, and 4hi works in most situations. 4lo and a-trac is a strong combination w/ aired down tired - I've pulled many a heavy duty (3/4 ton and 1 ton) 4wd truck out of the sand with 4lo and ATRAC with tires aired down to about 15psi (LT tires, not stock - stock tires you prob will be good at 20 psi).

I take my '03 V8 Limited on the beach each summer for two weeks. Your SR5 will be just fine on the sand.

Hey [MENTION=93894]J-BlickPhoto[/MENTION], you got any more photos of your shred sticks on top of your rack like that? Ever since I learned about the wonderful world of full-length roof racks, I've been drooling over Drabbits'. But I have tons of stupid questions about how my surfboards and snowboards can easily be secured. Yours is the first I've seen a shot of that looked like you're just putting them straight on the racks, but I wanted to find out if that's actually the case. I know you could pretty much tie down to anywhere up there, just not sure how it would actually play out for what I'd need it for... Your Runner looks great btw.

4runner loves beach.

4runner loves sand.

It moves through it so well at times, it takes some of the fun of it away. You will end up keeping it in 2wd waiting for the chance to possibly get stuck and activate 4wd. Then you just get pissed that you 4wd because you realize you didn't need it. (Again damn it) but you are still happy that you have it for when you do need it.

I ride pretty flat boards so it's easy for me to keep them on top. My sunroof is cutout so I place the tail in the sunroof and strap the boards down. You could place some pads down to decrease the stress on the concave, but it's not like I'm using ratchet straps. I only have short boards so everything is between 5'9 and 6'4.
