Hi folks, should I buy it???
live in the Rocky Mountains, looking at a 4 runner..know nothing about these expect I love them lol...always had chevys, but now I moved to the mountains.. here is the add



Toyota 4runner in white with 233xxx but 160xxx on a newer 4 cylinder engine and transmission. Removable fiberglass top, quick release jeep style doors, and comes with bikini top. Great sound system. 31" AT . I won't respond to texts.en

Im going to look at it in a few hours, what should I look for please? and is $2000 a good price? he said it sit for one year and some oil leaks from rear
of motor?

something is off here...the price should be much higher and in that area even higher yet. there is something this guys is trying to hide or he is trying to get someone to come by so he can put them in a hole for a pet. "it puts the lotion on the skin"..

take someone with you and check signs of a replaced motor and tranny.
 
First, don't be worried. I'm not saying he's a completely normal guy but you cannot go about it as if he is a dangerous psychopath. Anytime I go anywhere to buy things like this where a large sum of cash is involved I always bring a friend, usually my neighbor and my friend Kimber and her 15 little buddies :)

He said it's leaking oil from the rear of the motor, look around and see where it's coming from. If it's the rear main seal then you need to pull the tranny to replace it. In that case I wouldn't give any more than $2,000 for it as long as everything is in good shape. If the leak is coming from the rear of the valve cover then it's a quick and easy $5 fix.

"Much higher" for that 1G? Especially in that condition, mileage, and possible rear mainseal, I'll have to disagree, heh. $2k doesn't seem too far off, I wouldn't pay any more than that.

If possible have a mechanic look at it, costs about $100 but worth the piece of mind and avoiding a lemon that will haunt you later. Otherwise you should inspect it thoroughly, and obviously make sure it drives/brakes/steers perfect. See where that leak is coming. Does it smoke or make any weird noises? Is the interior thrashed? How's the rust situation underneath? How's the suspension? Any corrosion?
 
what year is it? 2k is a fair price in my opinion. Drive it! if the motor feels strong, docent smoke, trany don't slip, 4wd works, BUY IT!
I paid 2k for my first runner about 9 years ago. It was an 87 w/ 250,000ish. Never had a problem other then rebuilding the trany. Sold it to a friend that still DD's it. It's working on almost 400k miles and still goes strong!
 
In TX you can get a decent 1st gen in pretty good shape for 2k or less... In CO any working 4x4 is a little higher. But a 1st gen with a newer motor, tranny, a tube rear bumper, not rusted...I would expect him to be asking at least 2700.... this is simply my opinion and even if it is a rear main, if you have the tools and preferably a lift the rear main (and often the rear freeze plug) can be replace for about 40 bucks in parts. I have done two of them on my two 1G runners and it is an afternoon job.
 
Understood. I'm in Colorado actually. I just didn't think the rear bumper was worth anything. The motor/trans have 160k+ miles on it, not "newer", and chassis has over 230k. Hence why I personally wouldn't pay more than $2k. Other enthusiasts might. :)
 
hey now you cant judge a book on the price. i bought my 4runner (the first one and the one im still driving) for $900, had some dents and dings but was mechanically sound. i bought the 2nd for $100, it was rear ended and i just used a few things and sold the rest. the 3rd one i bought for $500 and used every bit of goodness of that truck in the one im driving now. just cuz its cheap dont mean it aint good.... except hookers.... just stay away from the cheap ones....

go take a look at it. drive it, maybe bring a buddy who knows more about vehicles with you and see what he thinks.

I disagree, I looked at every 4runner on craigslist accross the united states, as well as all forums and this price is nothing special. I ended up with an 89 in better shape than this, for 1800. I realize the geographical location may play a role in price, but again, I looked here as well. $2000 is typical and fair enough for this vehicle.
