also , can someone explain or point me in the direction of how the 4x4 system work in a 4th gen. including the diffs. i know theres a full time model and the v6 with the option for 2hi, but with regards to which wheels have power and when and why etc..
Welcome to the t4R!
you'll love it.
Bought a 2004 new and considered replacing it twice with something newer but everything else we considered (less money and more money) just didnt compare and still doesnt. Love the 4Runner and have no intention on replacement any time soon.
Both my wife and I love it. My wife went through a bought of lower back pain for a few months...the only thing which consisantly helped her back feel better was sitting in the 4Runner...she use to go out to the garage and just sit in it...LOL Hilarous!!! I think she was just going out to stare at it; I know I love to
She a part of the family and I love her...and my wife too...
and half the fun is moding and making it all your own.
welcome to the runner

i only run high quality components(not to be confused with or necesarilly high priced) in my vehicles, so i was thinking of redoing the stock location with a ported fiberglass enclosure, a sundown sa8 v2 would fit there perfectly since they do not require lots of space and they hit hard and low. sundown amp for sub, and then probably some diamond audio 6 1/2" component mid/highs , not sure on what amp i will use to power the front stage yet. and of course an aftermarket head unit.very nice. Would be interested in what you put in for a sound system. That's one of the things on my list...

yes i know the difference of the two models, but im asking about more specific info as far as are they limited slip, open diffs, locking diffs, rear lockers etc.. does just one wheel spin on front and back ..V6 4x4 is rear wheel drive until you crank on the 4x4 then it's all mountain drive.
yes i already have many plans for my 4runner, lol.. and i dont even have it yet..Sounds like you already have a plan well underway...very nice

bump cuz i need answers lol
In case it wasn't clear, once the V6 is in 4wd, it's functionally identical to the V8.
I'll describe with the assumption you're familiar with how 4wd works. If not, you'll have to ask more specifically.
Mechanically -- open diffs front and rear. Limited-slip, lockable center diff in transfer case (Torsen T3, works well, very durable). In all four 4wd modes (hi, lo, center locked/unlocked) wheel slip is handled on the open diffs by automatic brake pulsing (Atrac - Active Traction Control).
In 4hi, unlocked (standard 4wd mode) engine suppression can also act, as well as brake pulsing (atrac) to control wheel spin. I'm including descriptive language because the official terms have been used inconsistently over time and can cause confusion. Also exclusive to standard 4wd mode (ignoring 2wd) is skid control (VSC) which also uses engine suppression and brake pulsing to keep the vehicle straight or on course. Locking the center diff turns off VSC which means no engine suppression and no skid control. Brake pulsing (atrac) to control wheel spin is still active but it works well and is not too intrusive. In 08,09 models there is a separate switch to turn off engine suppression, otherwise, without modification, it requires locking the center diff. If you're curious how useful that is, see this thread.
To summarize in case I confused you, descriptively there are 3 things that can control wheel spin.
(1) Lockable center diff
(2) Engine suppression
(3) Brake pulsing
In discussions, you'll hear (2) being attributed to either VSC or Traction Control. (3) can be referred to by Active Traction Control or Traction Control, which in turn can be shortened to ATRAC and TRAC.
thanks for the descriptive reply.. it helped alot...

Glad to hear it. I meant to include the link below. If you want to see it in action, it's a very good example.

Edit:..Doh. Just noticed the vid on page 1. Still think you'll like the link above. You get to see and hear the tires finding traction.
im new to runners, but thats how i figure it... and im gunning for the v8.any type of machining or hot rodding that can be done on any engine can be done on the v8. Dont be so ignorant to think that just because there arent many performance parts for v8 4Runners there arent 2UZ performance parts available. This engine was put in a lot more vehicles than just 4th gen 4Runners. Its a little more expensive than your grandpas old push rod Chevy but cam swap, heads, intake and exhaust with some good custom tuning and youre talking 100hp increase over stock. Thats close to 400hp, you'd need some FI to compete with the 1GR.
IMO the v6 shouldnt even be an option on a vehicle this size, the v8 is more powerful and just as efficient and has more even more power available.
