I'm givin her all she's got Captin!!!

I wasn't going to read this originally till I saw the 'topic' and my eye's closed and I dreamed of Captain Kirk....

Anyways...I just did 300 miles all off road with 200 miles to the trail and 300 miles home. I wasn't passed one time and I had myself, my son and about 1,000 lbs of extra stuff. I don't drive it like a race car, but mine seems incredible responsive. Now compare it to my Girlfriends Corolla in Sport mode, I laugh as her car can do donuts around me. But when I purchased this I bought it to go into the woods and crawl though stuff, get the ass end broke loose in the sand (still does it with the extra 1,000lbs, no issues). I've often dreamed of getting a Ford Raptor SVT, but since they won't warranty the 'complete' vehicle anymore I won't do it. I've been though my young stage, that I'm not looking for a speed machine =D

But if you aren't happy with it, don't mod it completely till you are happy with it. From personal experience the worst thing to drive is something you completely hate..

I have zero engine mods and currently have 16k on the ODO.

I realize it's not going to add much HP but by letting it breathe better the throttle response should improve. I done the same mods on other vehicles and it does help.

For the record I don't hate the vehicle. It's a fantastic truck! Much better than my FJ. It's comfortable, I have all the luxury features I've always wanted in the FJ and then some, the ride is very smooth and it looks great. The throttle response is a little weak that's all.

I would agree. So my friend has a Tacoma with the 3.4L and no mod's(lift, etcs)

I have under-body armor, front bumper, roof rack and i can't out pull him/etc. And he drives it like he stole it also =D

Ohh I understand. I personally can't count the amount of vehicles I've owned with all my fingers or toes. But I can tell you I've owned/driven vehicles I hated which made me a pissy/cranky/F***** to deal with =-D

Sometimes I think I'm driving a completely different truck than some of you (not directed at you OP). Maybe I'm just getting old...

If you think that a louder vehicle is a more powerful one, then by all means add the intake and exhaust. You will get minimal gains at best with those mods.

Not correct. I've seen dyno results with just adding headers netting gains of 22 hp and 34 ft lbs tq to the wheels. That's with just the headers. If you add full exhaust, intake and a tune the 4.0 will have about 332hp and 365 ft lbs tq at the crank. Gaining 62hp and 87 ft lbs tq over stock. Those are pretty good improvements with minor bolt ons. Once my 4runner reaches 60k the first mods will definitely be the headers, cat back exhaust and intake. Then later I'll get the Bully Dog tuner. I've heard a 5th gen with the full URD exhaust and I was impressed with the exhaust note. It didn't have that sometimes annoying v6 sound, it mirrored the Nissan 3.5/3.7 v6 engines with good exhausts. Now if they ever release the trd blower and if they were to add another 100 hp, you would have a very nice powered 4runner.

That is considerably more than what I thought WTERUNNER meant by intake and exhaust. Where did you see a dual VVT-i motor making those kind of increases? I think we would all be interested in something like that.

The TRD supercharger isn't happening. It has been beaten to death here recently.

Ok I realize this is a big SUV but man this thing feels slow compared to my FJ. I'm hoping it gains more pep as I get more miles on it, only have 100 miles so far. Definitely going to have to look at some power mods like the TRD intake and an exhaust. What mods have forum members done to increase the performance?

Here is another link where this has been discussed previously.

Shoot. I can gain more than 22 hp on the dyno just by putting a fan OUTSIDE the 4Runner. Show me a dyno run done by a 3rd party that shows 22 hp gain on our engine. Show me a tune! We have had members here use Doug Thorley and while it was a modest increase they swapped it back. Bully Dog tuner? So Bully Dog has found a way into the box? They will make billions then.

Blowin' smoke Bevo.

Bully Dog doesn't have a tuner for the 2014 - 2015 4Runner. I just checked their website.

Nobody does. Toyota is a "closed" encrypted ECU and nobody has the energy to spend the time to break the encryption. There will most likely never be a tuner for it, which really sucks.

The only real hope is a piggy back type system.

Unfortunately, more and more mfgs are moving in the direction of Toyota when it comes to locking the ECU up. In fact, the Auto Alliance (basically every major auto mfg) is trying to make it illegal to modify any software related to the operation of your car. Automakers to gearheads: Stop repairing cars

The argument is that you don't technically own the software in your truck and therefore cannot modify it... It is protected by copyright law. When you purchased your truck you got a license to use it, but you don't actually own it and can therefore not modify it.

I hope the government issues an exemption, otherwise, the aftermarket ecosystem that thrives today for modern performance cars will no longer exist.

I'll tell you who has to "learn" a driving technique: YOU, not the 4R. Anyone that thinks the ECU is capable of this is going to have to cite a credible source in order for me to buy this. Until then, I call BS, and glad to be corrected.

It is drive-by-wire with the ECU programmed for early upshifts and late downshifts, and will do exactly this unless you DEMAND more.

The ECU responds to the speed and distance with which you depress the accelerator. If you ease it down (say) one inch, the ecu will ease you ahead, as you requested (likely not downshifting). If you quickly do this, the ecu will respond in kind (downshifting). When I tromp it (say, passing on a 2 lane) I am always impressed with how much performance this thing gives.

I have a sedate driving style, and have no issues with the 4R's response. I have however, learned how to manage the ecu by the speed and distance with which I use the accelerator. This thing will go like stink, all you have to do is learn how. Don't wait for it to learn you.

The cruise control however, does suck.

The Toyota techstream software has the ability to erase learned shift points, fuel delivery, etc. Disconnecting the battery will not erase these parameters.

I still have my fingers cross for Gadget to finish his Whipple project for our motors. URD just needs to get their software done.

Anything in particular your hope is based on?

You're supposed to be a good consumer, just open you wallet and be happy with the locked box they give you...

IP rights in firmware and low-level code in consumer items is a big issue, not limited to cars by any stretch of imagination.

There are superchargers for the Prado 150 with the same engine. Although I'm not sure they are bolted on to any 5 th gens they should be compatible. They also have the dual vvti engine. Its about $10k for a complete setup. So there really are superchargers in kit form if you really want one.
