I just got my 2012 T4R SR5 and I want to do a 2-3" lift on it and go to 275's, but I have no idea where to start.

Ive been reading all kinds of stuff on the forums the past couple of days and I'm even more lost now that when I started. Ive owned trucks in the past but I always left them stock and never messed with suspension or anything like that. Its mainly a DD with a little bit of hunting and mild offroading thrown into the mix every now and then(like maybe 1-2 times a month, IF that).

I'm in the military so I don't have a lot of spare cash to go all out but I would like a 2-3" lift to be able to fit 275's. Nothing really serious, I dont want to destroy my gas mileage, but at the same time I want to be able to have some fun with it, taking it to the beach on the outerbanks, maybe some mild trails as well.

What recommendations does the hive have? If you need any more info please ask, I'm just looking some help on where to start.

I have a few more questions but they are relating to mods I want to do after the lift so they can wait until later. I love this site!

The type of off roading that you are describing, does not seem to require a lift. (Unless I misunderstood your description) I do not think you need a lift to run 275 tires. (And I assume you mean 275/70/17). I run 285's with no problems. I had slight rubbing in full turn lock in reverse, and all I had to do was the inner wheel fender mod, all is good.

If your wanting a lift for looks, well that's a different story. Notwithstanding looks, I would start with tires. If you are not happy with just the larger tires, depending upon your concerns, then move to shocks/springs, then if you still have concerns, consider a lift.

Unless you are going heavy into 4 wheeling, rock crawling and the like, I do not see a need to spend the money and all the possible future problems/ramifications of a lift. Just my 2.5 cents. Be Safe.
 
i beat on my trail edition pretty hard and its stock.

i have similar interests to yours and use mine for getting to fishing spots, hunting, camping and travelling on forest service roads.


i would simply invest in a much better set of tires than a lift.


if you're looking to get a lift for looks and are satisfied with the stock ride i would suggest day star spacers. it'll give you a lift for sub 200 and allow you to fit larger tires.


personally, i would look at getting a taller tire than a wider one. my preference for tires out here is tall/skinnies

is a good example of tall/skinnies on a 5th gen. you'll get good off road traction but also reduce rolling resistance with the larger tire since its not as wide.

best balance of DD and off road in my opinion.
 
I've also got the daystar spacers and would suggest them as well for what you're wanting to do. If you go to autoanything use the coupon code LOYALTY and it should get you down to around $135 +/- I'm using that kit and running 285s

Thanks for the help guys! I do want it more for looks than for off-roading, and Ive pretty much settled on Daystar lift and 275 Cooper AT3's.

I had another question though. Would I be able to also throw on some Bilstein 5100's with the Daystar lift or no? I want a little stiffer ride, and have read good things on here about the 5100's.

I regretted the day after I put Daystars on my 4th gen. I'd do Bilsteins and call it a day.
 
I'm curious about this too. What do you mean by choppy?

I've got a 2012 TE that and have been debating on the whole lift vs. leveling kit vs. tires. I'd love to stay stock if I could fit 285 Duratracs... But I'd also like to level the truck out.
 
If you do want to improve the ride, i would skip the spacers and go with the 5100's like suggested. The front 5100's can be set up to 2.5 inches in the front (or lower if you just want to level it) and then you can so a spacer or a new coil in the back.

The ride was rougher, and it felt like there was less give in the factory suspension. Where I really noticed the difference was on dirt / gravel washboard mountain passes. My traction control was constantly coming on, especially around corners. Maybe somebody else can chime in on the disadvantages of spacer kits. You can call somebody like Slee and get their impression of spacer kits too. All the reputable suspension shops on the front range advised me against them, and I didn't listen. I know if I decide to lift the my new TE from factory height, it will done WITHOUT spacers.

I'm sorry, I can't really describe the "choppy" comment any better.

I can also say there is a ride quality difference with a true suspension upgrade. Is there a forum member in your area with a suspension upgrade that can take you for a spin?

Looks like the Toytec guys responded, give him a call, they steer you in the right direction.

Where is the best place to pick up a set of Bilstein 5100's? I'm gonna go with those for now and worry about lifting it a little maybe after new years.

On the topic of lifting though, if I just stick witht he 5100's up front and upgrade the coils in the rear(only looking for about a 2" lift) would I need swap out the UCA's? On that note, do I need to swap them out with just the 5100's if I plan on leveling it?

Sorry for more questions, I wanna make sure I make the right move. Buy once Cry once and all that.
