some owners have returned their prius' because they got better MPG in town than on the hwys... and for a car that has a 6month waiting list on them in some areas, and one of the highest costs for maintenance in its class they are not all they are cracked up to be... ever had to replace a battery in one... bet not, you can buy a lot of gas for the $2800 for the cost of ONE new battery for a prius and they have no proven them selfs yet with longevity like "normal" cars have. infact the first and second gen prius' where plagued with problems and anyone who knows about them will tell you stay away.

id love to see the MPGs of that prius hauling a trailer...:snacker:

That MR2 can pull a pretty penny if you sold it. It would help pay off the Prius. And its always good to have one "useful" truck in your garage.

Pruis' strength is city driving. On the HWY you can find plenty of other cars that do better. Jetta TDI being the one I would get. Then you don't have to worry about replacing the batteries and junk like that.

Regenerative braking doesn't help much on the freeway for sure. TDI and start aeromodding. I've been reading up on some 5vz & 2uz swaps people have done, and am keeping an eye out for one, but I won't give up the 4r for it either. I've always been a 3 cars at once kind of guy myself, may as well get back to it.

Sell the Mr2 (I understand it's your first car, so this might be a worse option)
Option three:
Keep both of them, sell the prius. (You will always need a big suv for purposes like snow days, or hauling crap not literally though)

I would get rid of the Prius and commute in the MR2, or if that doens't work for you sell the MR2 (if it was turbo my opinion would differ).

Prius' aren't great for the environment if you look at the big picture. Sure they get great fuel economy, but all those batteries are terrible for the environment, and I look at it as a hot potato, you don't want to be holding it when those batteries die. Do you have any idea how much extra fuel you would need to burn to be in worse shape than if you kept commuting your 4runner as far as money (purchase price of prius vs. extra fuel burnt driving 4runner) and envirionmental impact (all the materials that went into that unneccesary Prius) are concerned?!? The breakeven point on the Prius is way beyond it's expected service life, and once it starts needing driveline related maintenance you may never reach that point. Think long term and the Prius makes little sense to me.

If your commute is highway, a TDI is a better car anyways. Plus, at the end of the day, it's still a real car that you can spin wrenches on if need be.

You'll notice selling the 4runner didn't come up...

First, Ill say that yours is one of my favorite 4runners on the forum. It always looks clean and sharp in your pictures.

The 4runner is such a versitile vehicle. There's so much you can accomplish with it that you could never do with the MR2. I use mine for camping, biking, towing and hauling, carrying friends around, forestry work, and daily commuting. I say keep the 4runner.

And then I say . . . sell the Prius and get an early 2000ish honda civic for really cheap. Get a nice looking stock 4 door, not a hatchback rice burner. Youll get like 37mpg. Then use the extra money from selling the Prius to buy your fiance something really nice as a bribery for keeping the MR2. And there ya go

wait a week the audi will be broken and you'll be glad you have an extra car that gets decent MPG. I can't personally condone Prius driving... their is already to much "smug" in this world with out another one on the road. The funny part about all of this is I was just laughing the other day at the new Prius ad campaign that there is a "Prius for everyone".

getting 29mpg at redline with a perma-grin on my face driving up and down hwy 1 to and from LA. Even if the Prius drivers tried to keep up the extra heft of the batteries would have either sent them off/into a cliff, or caused that poor little gas motor to work too hard to make it as efficient as the Spyder. I'm sure the Prius gets decent mileage for the autopilot drivers, but if you want to be on autopilot just find some public transportation and leave more room on the roads for people that want to drive!

Whenever I see a Prius I think of that 1993 movie 'Demolition Man' with Sylvester Stalone, Wesley Snipes, and Sanda Bullock. It takes place in the 21st century (2032 to be exact) where everyone conforms perfectly, everything is perfectly safe, nobody exchanges bodily fluids, and everyone drives a car that looks just like a Prius! : I drove an Escape Hybrid for a while (30 mpg ave) but just didn't enjoy it so we traded for an 06 Mustang GT. Lots more fun, but lots more gas (and lots more foot in the gas).

there was a test done a few years back with a BMW M3 and a prius, it was an economy test... all the M3 had to do was keep up with the prius around a road course. the BMW m3 got better mpg

I know you said you aren't going to sell the Prius, so maybe the MR2. Think of the extra capacity you would lose by selling the 4Runner. First time you need to haul something or a bunch of people and you can't, or need to go on some rougher terrain...
