26 to 30 mpg on my trip
I am currently on a road-trip moving to Texas from Florida.
So, far the rough math shows I am getting an incredible 26-29 mpg. Almost 30 mpg at one point.
My rough math is to always add the same gallons of fuel and then use the trip meter to track the consumption rate at various points as the gas gauge needle drops and the warning light comes on.
(I have a 90 v6 4runner. I bought it new. Then gave it to my Dad in 95 when I went overseas in the military. maybe 45,000 miles on it. Dad was gentle with it. It now has 138000. He passed away just a few months ago. I just retired from the military this month so I returned from 12 years overseas and the 4runner is mine again. I'd rather have my Dad back...)
I attribute this excellent gas mileage to the following reasons.
1. He just kept skinny little tires on it, no lift, no special add-ons.
(I am dreaming of totally re-doing the car later on in Texas)
though the truck is fairly loaded down with all my crap.
I would say me at 160 pounds and about 160 pound sof luggage, (US military duffel bag and parachute bag full of clothes and other stuff) plus about 200 pounds of tools and other equipment salvaged from his storage locker after he died.
2. I am diligently driving on cruise doing about 57 mph on I-10.
Because I am a bit worried about the truck making it all the way safely and also to save fuel. It is grandpa mode but if I can make a small editorial comment, everyoen else is hauling butt passed me and it is almost sickening how much fuel that must be guzzling. No wonder we are stuck over there in Iraq.
3. Not running the A/C. All windows closed nothing on the roof rack so she is aerodynamically trimmed and smooth.
In the morning it has been cool with just vent fan blowing at me, but I am sweating my nuts off later in the day. I finally broke down and cracked the windows a bit on each front side.
I did play around with what fuel to buy. It seemed like I tweaked up a bit a few mpg when I pumped in 5 gallons of 93 octane.
Maybe it is some other reason. And yes, I only pump in 5 gallons of fuel at a time versus filling it completely. No sense to add all that extra weight with so many gas stations all along my route. I stop ans stretch my legs and pump in 5 gallons when the fuel gauge warning light comes on.
Take care.
