Inexpensive Mods

I'm trying to make my 96 4Runner look better but I find most of my money going to mortgage, bills, etc. What kind of mods can I do with a modest budget? I'm already looking into painting my emblems, but are there any other ideas out there? I'm fairly mechanically inclined. I do my own brakes and installed my stereo among other things. Any thoughts? Thanks.

no matter how hard it is for your significant other to climb into your runner you should TAKE YOUR RUNNING BOARDS OFF! haha jk buddy!

Awesome ideas so far thanks!

Evan - I may look into taking off my running boards just to see. But I think I should probably put the rest of my bumper back on first because people aren't buying my "it gives the tires more clearance for offroading" story.

Clemson - If you don't mind me asking how much time/money did it cost you to put LEDs in your interior? The pics I've seen of those look really good.

Where did you buy the headlights, clear corners, driving lights, etc. ?

I really want an 02 grille...

NONE ON EBAY!!!

ahh I really don't wanna pay the 80+ bucks for a new one

got any leads? If not I guess im gonna give in to the 80 buck one

Painting the emblems is a good call, I just did mine last weekend. Here's the write-up that I used if you're interested: Blacked out Emblems Write-up

Definitely recommend taking off the running boards. I really like how runners look without them. But it's all personal preference.

You could install an LED dome light to replace the stock one. I just got mine in the mail and it makes a huge difference. Oznium LED Dome Light The 2"x2" is the correct size.

You could do clear corners/bumpers for just under $100.

Or a custom 3rd brake light, I just ordered this and I know Clemson, Sloan, and sn0wrunner have it as well: Custom 3rd Brake Light

Looks pretty cool. Haven't seen any for less than 80. Maybe a junkyard or something?

I bought clear bumpers, just haven't put them in yet. I'll have to wait on clear corners til I can get the 99-02 headlights as well otherwise it'll probably look funny with my stock ones. I think I'll definitely do the dome light though. Mine's pretty wimpy. Thanks for the ideas!

Yeah mine just came in the mail today so I haven't been able to see what it looks like at night but even during the day it looks pretty sweet. Definitely a nice improvement and a really easy/cheap mod.

Now I just need to look into swapping out the map lights with LEDs.

all from ebay headlights are oem dont get anything else might take awhile to find a good set also the 99-up clear corners look better with the 99-up headlights

LEDs for the interior aren't more than $70.

It's going to be hard to find '99 and up headlights for less than $100. I just spent $180 for two.

Does anybody know if there are blue led's that can fit in clear corners? I just think that would look sick. i don't mean to hijack your thread steve.

Yeah, they make led bulbs in a bunch of colors for the markers, I have amber, but some states must have the amber markers, hence the infiniti fx recall.

Thanks, I figured there might be some law about that, i'll have to check with Washington law's.

EDIT: I just looked it up

RCW 46.37.100
Color of clearance lamps, side marker lamps, back-up lamps, and reflectors.

(1) Front clearance lamps and those marker lamps and reflectors mounted on the front or on the side near the front of a vehicle shall display or reflect an amber color.

(2) Rear clearance lamps and those marker lamps and reflectors mounted on the rear or on the sides near the rear of a vehicle shall display or reflect a red color.

(3) All lighting devices and reflectors mounted on the rear of any vehicle shall display or reflect a red color, except the stop lamp or other signal device, which may be red, amber, or yellow, and except that on any vehicle forty or more years old, or on any motorcycle regardless of age, the taillight may also contain a blue or purple insert of not more than one inch in diameter, and except that the light illuminating the license plate shall be white and the light emitted by a back-up lamp shall be white or amber.
