Infinity Reference Speakers

I just got my Infinity Reference speakers, and had a question or two about them. I know quite a few on the forum are using them, so I figured you guys could help me out here. And maybe this can just be the general thread for any info on these speakers.

I dont have an external amp. I may add one in the future, but for now Im wondering if Im suppose to use these guys with speakers? Or are they just for external amp. The instructions dont say much about them other than how they hook up, so honestly I have no idea what they are

STOP.

If you connected the speakers without those crossovers hooked up then disconnect them now and wire it up correctly.

You will damage the speakers without it.

The crossover piece that comes with the Infinity Reference (or any brand components) is very important.

It should have 6 wires.
+/- source which connects to Left or Right channel from head unit OR external amp.
+/- for the tweeter
+/- for the woofer

READ THE MANUAL BRO. If you can't find it then look it up on Infinity's website.

I have owned both the Reference and the Kappas.

I actually havent started installing them yet, and this is why. I wanted to ask about what I didnt know. They didnt send me a manual with the speakers believe it or not. Just a diagram, and everything you mentioned is there.

Where did you mount the "crossover" pieces? Im guessing theres room in the door panels, but I havent pulled them apart yet.

I ran new wire and an amp, so I mounted the cross-overs near the amp. Many will run the amp under the passenger seat.

For now Ill just be using the existing wires. Do the stock speakers use a similar "crossover" peice as well? I ask because Im wondering how the wiring will work. Again, I havent looked in the door panels yet. I may try doing it tomorrow if time permits.

Today I would like to talk about a few Stereo Mod's I've done. I put these speakers in over 2 years ago but last week I had my door panels off and thought I would take some pictures.

The panels are really easy to remove for anyone who hasn't done it before.

I needed a new stereo because my beloved 2003 Alpine MP3/CD Radio finally died last month. *It is pictured below

I ended up buying a really kick-@ss used Alpine MP3/CD Premium Head Unit on EBAY for $200. *It has a born on date of 2005

New Stereo Upgrade

1. Sound Deadening Mod - Roofing Material

5. Ran new 14 (or 16g?) wires from the amp under the seat to all 4 doors (this is highly recommended by me)

Here is my new (used) Alpine 9835 MP3/CD Head Unit. I cannot stress enough how much of a difference the 4V pre-out, 109db signal to noise ratio and the TILT feature make this thing awesome. Bought on ebay for $109 + $99 for a new faceplate.

So did the stock system have the crossover piece? I ask because Im just wondering what wires plug into the IN slots. Honestly I shouldnt ask any more questions until I have the time to look at it for myself. Once I take the panels off Im sure Ill be able to figure it out.

Well if you a tweeter right in the corner where the dash meets the door then you have components. I am not sure if every year came with components.

Are you using the stock deck or an after market deck?

If it is an aftermarket deck then I really, really suggest running new 14 G wires.

14 G speaker wire is pretty cheap on Amazon.

This will also help to prevent speaker alternator whine. By running new speaker wire, new power and new ground you will for sure not get the dredded ALT whine.

Ya I have the factory tweeters. So im just wondering if the Infinity Reference is an identical system. I run the tweeters and woofers from the unit, and then the other two wires to the IN spot on the unit. Im not worried about placing the unit as long as it fits inside the door panels.

I already have an aftermarket head unit installed as well. Though it was installed by PO and there are a ton of wires back there that arent hooked to anything. Not sure what all those are for. Ill post a picture when I tear into it

Ok. Boot question here....

What exhactally is the "Cross over" for? What does it do? I'm good with wiring(obviously), never had a problem from my JVC Arsenal HU, my Rockford Fosgate Prime spreakers. The only problem I've had is when I blew my Clarion 4.25" back door speakers. No biggie, just upgrade to some 6.5" speakers with a custom mount, right?

What is that little Hertz thing that's in there with all the wires coming out?

If I'm installing the same Rockford's in the back that I have in the front? do I need a cross over?

I'm assuming that when I install my Rockford Fosgate R2D2 10" subs, that the amp will have a cross over built in, or do I need something else?

Like I said, I'm good at wiring. I'm good at looking at directions. I just want to know what all this crap is for, and if it's truely needed.

So your factory radio has internal cross overs and the Infinity (or other brand) will always have an external cross-over box.

This means on the back of the factory head unit you will see more than 4 pairs of speaker wires, probably 6, each with a positive and negative.

ALL aftermarket radios have outputs for 4 pairs of speaker wires. If you connect the left-front to a 2-way single 6.5" speaker then cool you just wire it directly. However if you are running components in the front then you will need to connect the front left speaker wires to the cross-over box and then run separate new wires to the tweeter and woofer from the cross over. READ the Infinity manual because it has big pictures.

I always suggest running new 14G speaker wire because the factory wiring is SO puny - it is probably like 22G so small. .... Run new wire, it is actually really really easy and requires no drilling at all. You can pass the wire through the door and under the dash and carpet.

A crossover is a series of electrical components that split the incoming audio signal into separate frequency ranges...a lower range for the woofers to play, and a higher range for the tweeters to play. That way, the tweeters never see the low frequencies, and the woofers never see the high frequencies. The speakers transduce the frequencies they were designed to play, and everyone is happy.

I wouldn't put crossovers in the door itself. There is a lot of water that goes through the two "layers" of a door. Not to mention every time you slam the door, it could weaken the components on the crossover circuit board. I always mount mine inside somewhere, and just run slightly longer cable to the speakers.

But now I have a 4-channel amp with active crossovers...so I no longer need the passives!

When I take my door panel off, am I going to see (A) two sets of wires, one set running to the tweeter, and one running to the woofer . . . or (B) am I going to see one set of wires running to an existing crossover unit, and then the tweeter and woofer wires running out of that?

I ask because if its option (A) Im not sure Ill know what wires to hook to the crossover unit. In case (B) obviously its plug and play.

I probably will take your advice Brian and order those wires from Amazon. And Ive been wanting to run sound deadening material for a long time. Just cant spend that money right now. When I do it Im gonna do the whole vehicle

Doc, that is the infinity cross-over box. It is not optional.

The cross over is part of the speaker. Think of a home theater tower speaker. It has multiple speakers mounted in a wooden box. Inside that box may be a small circuit board acting as a crossover.

Read the crutchfield link I posted. That is a great FAQ.

You really must run new wires if you want to do it right. I know you all have mad skills. I have no idea how to weld but I guarantee this is easier.

Yes as I mentioned above you will see two sets of wires per front door. You really should run new clean wires.

In your factory system only for the front Toyota hooked the tweeters to the woofer, now they got away with this buy installing resistors to the speakers to eliminate high and low frequencies. You will always need to run the new cross overs when installing newer component sets, it makes the speakers run at the right frequencies at any listing level.
When you pull your door panel apart it should be evident what goes to what. You have two 22awg wire coming from the door into a plug right above your stock woofer those are the only wires you will need.
As for running new wires for your speakers it is not hard and unless you are running a amp isn't needed, I have no whine in my system and can crank it to 35 and have no distortion. Sound barrier is a must when you can afford it night and day difference.

You can mount the crossovers really wherever you would like under your seat, behind kick panels, on your roof lol there pretty rugged my set of front components iv had for two years even sat at the bottom of a river for a night when I sunk my first gen and they still work and perform flawlessly.
