initial buying questions

New member
New guy here and I'm planning on buying a new 4runner next year [waiting for a lease to run out].

In this thread the average time from order to deliver seems to be about 3 months: http://www.toyota-4runner.org/general-discussions/210538-anyone-else-special-order-4runner-2.html

I'll probably be keeping this vehicle for a while and so will want it to be pretty much exactly what I want, hence ordering it.

From now until then, I'm going to be reading and learning what that is.

My immediate questions are:

1] are major changes anticipated between the current model and Model Year 2017?

2] when will the '17 change over occur?

I'd prefer to get a '16, order it near the end of the year and have it arrive in the fall rather than miss the cut off and have to wait that much longer for the change over.

Although we don't know, it is generally *assumed* that 2017 seems likely to be the MY for the release of the 6th Gen 4R. There are threads rife with speculation, some informed, some not.

As to special ordering, this should be of help, as your region's dealers may or may not have exactly what you want. Each Region has the autonomy to determine which options they will offer. Eg You may want a TE/KDSS which your region has decided not to offer. Hence why Toyota.com's builder requires your zip code.

Toyota divides the country into 12 regions, offering different options in each. The territories are listed below. As you research your purchase, keep in mind that you’re not limited to the region you live in.
If there is a significantly better deal available in another region, it might be worth the trouble to travel and buy there. If someone offered you a few thousand dollars to drive to a nearby state and back, you might very well take the deal -- why not make the same drive to save that money on a new car? Once you know your region, make sure you check out the Best Toyota deals available to you.

Is there any solid information on the 6th gen model? I did some searching online and all I found seemed like speculation and wishing. I have a 2016 TRD Pro on order now but would be very curious to see what the 2017 would look like and have to offer, and/or if there will be any major change at all.
 
I special ordered a 2016 TE w/KDSS and as the process proceeded from factory build, to shipping over the pond, to getting on the truck or train, to delivery to Chicago, it was about 5-6 weeks, IF what I was being told was correct :)

At the 11th hour a friend mentioned the Costco thing and I went that route. You tell Costco what you want, they find the closest dealer that participates with your model and the dealer finds one with the exact options you listed, and then they sell it at dealer cost (whatever that really is). In my case that saved me about $2.5-3K over the special order, and I got the exact same vehicle. In fact I paid about the same as what used 2015 4Runner's are listed for on the lot.

BTW, if you really want a TRDP, better take the '16, it is discontinued for '17.
 
Yep, I was actually referring to Post #2 partially when I referred to the speculations on and about the 6th generation. You didn't state a fact but an assumption, which you did note, thanks. Considering we are getting close to the end of the year I was curious if any one had "actual" information.

And, my TRDP is on its way either way, I was just curious about any new generations, for knowledge and potentially bargaining power.

SR5P = SR5 Premium
TE = Trail Edition
TEP= Trail Edition Premium
KDSS = TE or TEP with KDSS option
TRDP = (Trail Edition) TRD Pro

EDIT: Because it's confusing, I'll add that Toyota doesn't use the term 'models' as most mfgrs do ... rather they are referred to as 'grades', eg "The SR5 Grade". Who knows?

There are 40-leven common acronyms at use around here. Maybe [MENTION=66316]1engineer[/MENTION] would like to start a sticky-list.

Don't know if that was a typo Phil, but I don't consider the TRD Pro a "Trail" because you cannot get KDSS on it.

As noted in this thread the longest a gen has run is 7 model years, which would indicate that the 2017 model year (out at the end of 2016) would be a redesign. There is another thread on here (and web links) that has information from autonews (who tracks these things) and they seem to think the 6th gen redesign will be in calendar year 2017, which equates to 2018 model year. This would be stretching this gen to 8 model years. I am in the same boat and my plan is as follows:

January is the Detriot Auto Show and late March is the New York auto show, with Chicago in between. If the 6th gen is not shown at one of those shows then it is likely not coming for 2017 model year. I plan to wait until March 26 and if no 6th gen is shown I am going to pick up a 2016 TEP, Trail with some TRD Parts in Quicksand or 2013 200 series LC.

^ Your plan is a solid one. I don't want a new model and am hoping to wait until summer to buy current gen but I don't think I'll risk it if there isn't an indication that they will extend it another year. I may be buying sooner than I anticipate.

No problem. If you are set on 5th gen just keep an eye on the auto show reveals and if they show a new gen by the first of April then go get yourself one then to make sure you get a 5th gen. The earlier the better if there is a new gen coming because the assembly lines will have to switch over several weeks before its release and the supply of 5th gens will be limited to what is on the dealer lots and on the boats coming over. If a new gen is released you should probably be good buying in mid-summer but if it were me I would plan on getting a little earlier for the best selection.

Sounds like this is what you are leaning toward and is a solid plan.
