Initial Order - what to skip from dealer

Hey all -- a more formal introduction to follow.

I'm leaning towards buying a Limited from the dealer new. I was wondering if I could get some input on what, if anything, I should get from the dealer in my order if I go that route.

My buddy (hi siz) told me to skip the running boards which I'll be doing.

How about the remote start?

It seems like I can get everything cheaper doing it solo with third-party parts.

From what I have read on this site, the factory remote start is a POS as when you open the door it shuts off the motor and you then have to start it up again and it has horrible range. I dont have it, just read up on it here.

The dealer is going to charge a premium for all extras, I would get it as bare bones as you can, then add later. Unless you want to wrap it into your loan but thats a bad idea.

Thanks. What you typed echoes what I am planning to do unless there's multiple support for some OEM item.
 
Limited options

To answer this question we need to know how you intend to use it. You're in Columbus, Ohio. Some might say the remote start would be handy in winter there. I have no use for it here in So Cal.
Yes, the automatic running boards cost $1500. One guy here just found a pair of fixed running boards used for $100. I'd rather have rock sliders.
Do you need the 3rd row seat? Try sitting in one before you buy it to haul adults. People here say the seat has small leg room.
I just ordered a Trail Edition that suites my needs. I didn't go for any of the options except the KDSS. Wanted Audio without the NAV or any other marked up, expensive accessories. I can find most of these things that are better suited to my off-road needs and less expensive in aftermarket parts.

RBW as has been suggested; I would really think twice about the third row seating. If you have a need then buy all means go for it; on the other hand if you don't - skip the third row. I hunted hard to find a 2015 LE without third row. I am happy with the extra storage space

Great thanks all.

Intended use is an every day vehicle with plenty of space to make some trips back home to Philadelphia with my wife, 2 kids, 1 dog and a bunch of stuff my wife insists we need but actually don't.

Off-roading is not the primary use for this vehicle. I do plan on taking it to parks for camping and recreation but no serious off-roading plans as of now.

My only concern with the vehicle is road noise. I will need to make a lot of calls from the truck and want to make sure I'll be heard clearly on the other end. I do see from other posts on this forum that you can add some sound dampening. It also seems like the bluetooth quality is quite good.

If you can get it without the auto start, do so. Unless you park outside your front door, its useless. The Limited is extremely quiet inside. Maybe not Rolls Royce quiet but phone calls won't be a problem. One item to take into consideration is the 20" wheels. The selection for All Season tires is limited. Not a deal breaker for me as the added luxury is well worth the loss of joyriding in a blizzard once or twice a year.
 
I take a handful of business calls in the 4runner each week and have never had a complaint or comment in regards to the clarity of the phone call.
 
And a Limited pro tip, if you find the fan noise seems loud and you're on a call, check to see if the passenger ventilated seat is on. It makes a bit of a racket when there's no one sitting in the seat and is almost as loud as the main climate control fan. Aside from that, the Bluetooth integration is seamless, I do quite a few work calls from mine and it's an improvement from my 07 Audi I traded in terms of quality and reliability in that department.
 
FWIW - I have a trail premium 2015 and an RX350. I find the interior noise to be comparable between the two on the highway. I was very surprised by how quiet the trail edition is. I think a limited will likely be a bit better. OTOH the fan is pretty noisy and often is disruptive to phone calls for me when on about 50% or higher. The call clarity seems better from the RX350 than the 4runner.

Something else to be aware of is that the middle row of seats are different seats and fold differently when the 3rd row is included. The flat deck that results is about 8-10" higher in a 3rd row seat model because the front seats just tip forward, whereas the 2 row model the middle row bottoms tip forward before the seat backs fold down. It makes a significant difference in interior storage capacity. I have no kids, so my middle row lives folded down 99% of the time. And I use my 4runner for a utility vehicle. I haul lots of crap back there. Of course if you need a seat for extra kids - this isn't so much of a concern.
 
Don't let them put in a security system...you have one built in already. They had done this to mine and I made them take it out and give me my money back.
 
You can in theory have no floor mats too! They are worth over $100. No point wasting $100+ if all you are going to do is take the carpet floor mats out to put in say weathertechs.

Also skip on the power running boards, 3rd row seat (if you don't care for them, I'm 5'8, 165lbs and I have no idea how the designers expect an adult to mange to crawl into the 3rd row even when the door is fully swung open).
 
Factory remote start is not a POS, could be designed better but serves the purpose depending on needs and willingness to go aftermarket. The third row is a nice thing to have if you have kids, no it's not comfortable for adults but for occasional use its fine for short people and kids. Otherwise the LE is very nice and sounds like plenty capable for your needs.
 
I'll add to what a couple others mentioned...I got the factory remote start and while it's nice if you're starting it from very close (maybe 100-200 feet in real world situations) and don't mind if it shuts off when you unlock it, I wish I would have saved the money and paid for an aftermarket remote start. Living in AZ I use it to cool the truck down, but oftentimes I'm walking back to it in a parking lot or something and by the time it's in range it's only on for 15-20 seconds and then shuts off while I'm getting into it. I don't even bother using it anymore because the range is so limited and it shuts off when the door is unlocked. If however you are using it to warm up in the morning while it's in your garage and you're getting ready for work, then it's probably fine and wouldn't require a second remote or anything like that.

I also opted to not get floormats because I know what a few years of camping, a 5 year old, etc. can do to the factor ones. I had front and rear Weathertec floormats sitting in my garage before my 4R showed up at the dealer and just brought them with me and put them in when I picked it up.
 
for the money, factory remote is a joke.
At 500-600$ range you are looking at an OLED 2way remote start from Python/Viper with a Smart start and/or 1 mile range on the remote itself, and get a chance to reduce your insurance cost by a few bucks (depending on the insurance carrier)
 
Kinda late to the party, but I just recently grabbed an LE with nothing but carpeted floor mats and wheel locks. I used the Costco buying program and got the truck at $1500 below dealer invoice and and the options at dealer cost.
It wasn't worth making the dealer take the options off the truck.
I have since bought OEM roof rack cross bars for $60, an OEM chrome exhaust tip, OEM body-colored door edge guard trim pieces, OEM mud guards and an AVS hood deflector all for about $50 each. Currently found this thread looking for running boards.
Bottom line if you haven't bought the truck already: get the Limited bone stock and buy the options separately. You will save a lot of money.

Do you mind me asking your price before T&T?

The best deal I've gotten so far is $41,808 + T&T for a blue/redwood LE with the third row folders. MSRP $45,095.

That price is through truecar.com and some negotiating on my part.

I'm not a costco member but am considering the membership just for this perk. Seems like it would pay for itself.
