input shaft grinding on crank

being an IFS, there was a chance it was the 3.0. but yes, I expected it was a 22r as well.

if what you are saying is true, the crank is moving front to back, the thrust washers are the problem. you may be able to drop the oil pan, remove the center main cap, and replace them. depending on WHY its moving, and how bad the damage is, just replacing them might be all it needs.

3.0 came out in 88, so it wouldnt be in a 85.

Pulling the oil pan in an IFS rig is a chore. Either need to lift the engine or drop the front diff. But I agree, you need to take a peak inside.

hm, really? I could have sworn ive seen the 3.0 in an 86 before.

Never been in a 22r. Do the thrust washers snap into the block or the mains? Will the wear be on the block, cap or both? And, what will make it unrepairable?

damn..its been a long time since I was inside one. I want to say its on both. but I think you can slide the upper half into place. if there is too much wear, that even a new washer wont stay in place, it would need major repairs to fix it. at that point, its better to just replace the engine.

Maybe they put it in? I would believe a late 87 would have one, just like this guys 85 has ifs.
yes, anything is possible.

I almost bought an 86 extended cab, it was a factory straight axle.
MAYBE someone had swapped cabs. but it all looked original.
