Installing aftermarket 110V?

Hey guys, I opted out of the "convenience package" because I didn't really want the sunroof. Now I'm finding that 110V outlets would be really useful.

Has anyone wired this up themselves with an aftermarket inverter and put sockets in the stock locations? I don't think it'd be too hard but I don't know a ton about electrical stuff.

Alternatively, you could try to source the factory inverter at a junk yard possibly?

Just buy an aftermarket inverter - they have become incredibly affordable in the last few years. If you go big (1000W+) you will want to run at least a #4AWG for the 12V supply, and keep the wiring less than 5' or so. I personally wouldn't mess around with trying to install receptacles in the factory locations. Just mount the inverter in a central spot and use extension cords.

Another word of advice: be wary of how the inverter you buy is rated for power output. I got burned on this once: I bought a 3000W inverter and later found that since it had 3 receptacles they were able to just add the wattage output of each one. I basically got a 1000W inverter x3.

I have a 1000W inverter under the drivers seat. When I go camping, I run a toaster and a small coffee pot from it.

True about the rating- most I can usually get away with is around 750W or so. Sometimes the java won't brew unless the truck is running- I need a bigger battery!

All in all very useful and easy to get to.

A UPS with the 12volt battery (wired on the ignition side) is something I've contemplated. Walmart has a small one for around $40. Just depends on how many watts you need. A side benefit of the UPS would be power when the vehicle is shut off without concern for running down the start battery.

Uninterrupted Power Supply.

Basically it's an inverter with its own battery. Normally plugs into a 110v outlet to protect electronic equipment during a power outage. The smaller 12v DC battery equipped ones are good for less than 1000 watts. The Walmart one does 425 watts.

Not saying this is a better way to go....just another option.

Besides providing isolation from power surges or drops; a UPS also provides power for a limited time (around 10 - 15 min depending on UPS and load) It's a good thing to have your computer plugged into at home. Loose power due to a storm and you have time to boot down instead of crashing hard.
