Installing the 3.4 cams correct, HELP!

Ok

I'm going to eat crow and admit it. This is just kicking my ass I'm pretty mechanical but this is the first Dule over head cam job I have done and I did not think it would be that hard to get correct. I'm really starting to get pissed about it. This should have not took this long.

So bottom line is this- How should the cams go in and pics please.

I have my AllData sheet and my Manuel but I'm still not getting this. The first cam is as I see it is 180 out. My Marks are at the 6 position and not at the top like they should be. I stopped at that point.

I have PM TheDurk and waiting for him to answer but I thought I would also post something up. I really want to get this engine done today so I can stick it in maybe Monday or Tuesday. My other engine is ready to be pulled out of the 99. Thanks guys.

Im just gonna let you know that I have no idea how to install those cams cuz Ive never done it. But just for fun I watched a guy do it on you tube. Here is a link to Part 3 of his video series where he takes a 1995 tacoma with a 5VZ engine and tears it down to investigate a head gasket or coolant issue. He goes into a lot of detail about how he found that his Cams were installed incorrectly and so forth. I hope it helps.

I watched that video and figured out that is how the machine shop goofed up the cams. Glad I caught that before install.

I just did mine if you need help let me know
 
I can tell you that one side the single dots line up , and the other cylinder head the double dots line up on the other head. Do you have the service bolt in also?
So the 2 dots are for the right camshafts
The single dots are for the left. you may need to use a 24mm wrench to help them seat in. The dots need to to be 90 degrees from the spark plug tower. basically flat with the cylinder head where the valve cover seats on.

See pics. Why is that wheel not at top dead on the marks? Am I 180 out? Or am I just over thinking this like I do at times with engines.

The hole that's at the 11 o'clock is correct. If you eye ball the dots on the camshaft gear they should be level with the cylinder head valve cover gasket surface. Like i said the hole has actual hole has another purpose. Keeping the constant pressure on the intake gear for no noise direct gear to gear lash.
 
Like i said in the PM. the cam lining up with the timing marks on the Big belt driven gear is for timing the little dots are for install for minimal tension on the cams for installation. you can break a cam if installed incorrectly , hence why there is a service procedure to install them that way.

Pictures were taken from my phone with the help of a stream light flash light with the high power lamp and battery. I'm not great at pictures.

You don't need to change anything, I wasn't kidding. They are shockingly sharp photos. It seems most pics on this forum are taken with a potato.

Cams are now in and all lined up as they should be. Lower intake time...

You always NEED a bigger hammer. As for tapes. Good luck finding one if you ever need one. I just found one of them under my kids bed,and one in the shed. They now all live on my tool box so I can find them or at least one anyhow.
