Interior Spare Tire Mount

Currently I have my fullsize spare ratchet strapped laying down in the back of my 4runner. I was trying to find a spare tire mount that I can keep my tire standing so I could save some of my cargo room in the rear. I've been searching all over but haven't found a mount yet. Does anyone else have a fullsize spare mounted inside? If so please post some pictures!!!

Your best bet fabricate some sort of cradle then you would just use a simple tie-down strap..

Perhaps consider building something out of wood?

How are you using the truck these days, and are you running a size too large to go under in the factory location?

Running a 285/70/17 with a matching wheel.. Hard to squeeze under the truck.. most likely would need it aired down all the way to fit..

Are there any long-term concerns with running a big tire all squished and stuffed into the factory spare tire well?

Perhaps out of roundness after a few years?

Not 100% certain, but I would assume that being squished up there is definitely not the best for the tire. I think I've read something about that on here before also..

Something else is that you have doubled the weight hanging on that little cable, 285 is 85-90lbs. Just a thought. I have no idea what its rated.

Very valid concern, but for a spare tire I don't really care as much. It only needs to work once and doesn't have to be pretty. Just needs to get me home.

Personally I would take an under car mounted out-of-round than something in my cargo area... those tires are huge and I need that space.

End of the day I prefer not to beat up my spare if I have to but considering the option of in-car I would probably just deal with it.

I guess the other options are some type of rear bumper / gate carrier but I find that crazy expensive as well. I could deal with on the roof rack but its heavy and a pain to get on and off. Also the worse place to throw a bunch of weight on something that is already top heavy.

I'm glad teh 255-75 stuff's up in there nicely.. 5 tire rotation with SUUUUPER cheap Jeep takeoffs, available everywhere in North America.

Something I've thought of too, especially as my cable has started to fray. I would swap for the 5th gen chain if I were to try to stuff it up there. I can't really do anything larger than a 265/70 or 255/75 with my HD hitch

I'd be worried about cable failure and it dropped out on the hwy after using it for long-term storage. (Unlikely, but....)


lmk if you find a cabin storage system, would prefer my spare lower instead of on the roof where it raises the center of gravity

I happen to be one of those people that like a 255/75 on my truck. Lucky for me its also about as big as you can go before having to really start thinking about re-gearing and spare relocation.

I also just so happen to get lucky and find 7 of them, all in 90% or better condition. The worse of the bunch got spare tire duty. 4 on the truck, and two sitting in the garage as my DGAF spares... sure beats a tire warranty.

Reduces departure angle, most (I hear) don't have tight enough tolerance and are noisy. That's why I've decided on eventuality of a bumper or custom tire carrier

Reviving an old thread here… as expensive as bumper swing outs are, I’m suprised more aren’t looking for more cost effective interior spare tire mounting solutions. For me… yea I’d like a bumper swing out eventually… but I don’t have that kind of cash right now.. until I do though, it would be nice to have a cost effective way to carry a full size spare. I don’t mind sacrificing a little cargo space and I don’t want to try to squish a 33” tire under the car.

One sort of decent solution I found was this mount, which works in the gx470 as well. It’s much easier on the pocket book too. Only problem is that I don’t have a 3rd row seat bracket…

Has anyone tried installing a 3rd row seat bracket in a 4runner that didn’t come with the 3rd row? Or have you come up with better solutions for an interior spare mount?

I found some pics online of the rear lower quarter trim panels and it looks like the seat bracket cubbies are further back in the 3rd row seat versions notice the picture comparison here.

The non-3rd row version would require quite a bit of unusual trimming to make it work.. not to mention I still don’t know whether I’d have to drill mounting holes or not either.

I’m feeling like it might be easier to just fabricate something unique to non-3rd row 4runner.

Maybe this info will help anyone looking to do something similar. Also open to any good suggestions here from the experts!

I have an '03 V8 and I mounted the stock spare inside the rear similar to what the GX470 picture shows except I use three tie down points. Works well for me. I can't (figure out how) to upload pictures, but if you're interested pm me and I can email you a couple of pictures of my setup.

I've ordered this Boxer Tire Tie Downs 2" Twisted Hook Black Ratchet Strap Fully Adjustable For Tires Up To 39" x 13.5 - Kartek Off-Road and some D-ring brackets I can bolt to the floor. Seems like the easiest method I can come up with.
