Says there is a new audio ECU for people who have a 5th gen T4R and an iPod product that has issues with the head unit.* It specifically says that you have to have an iPod that falls under the list to get the TSB done. There is also a VIN limit. Something in the 25000 range, IIRC. They must have made a running change sometime with the redesigned ECU that works with most of the modern iPod models.

* My 3rd gen iPod nano works with my T4R but my wife's 4th gen iPod nano will occasionally give an "error 3" code. I'd only be eligible for the TSB under my wife's iPod.

So how do we figure out if we qualify and deal with it? I get the ERROR 3 fairly often and even have seen the dreaded ERROR 5. Both of which I have no idea as to thier meaning.

Give your dealer's service team a call. With the VIN, TSB #, and iPod model, they should be able to confirm if you qualify.

Which iPod model do you have and what are the last 6 digits of your VIN?

Thanks for your help Quentin. I have a 80GB, 5th Generation Ipod. Ironic kind of. The last 6 of my VIN are 000300. This is probably a novice question but what is a TSB?

Mine works... but not really well. I use bluetooth streaming 99% of the time, though. It works much better.

I know I can stream but when I plug it in on longer trips to charge via the USB why not take advantage of the ability to play music that way too. Currently I get a couple songs then the 'Error'. I want to know if it is worth having the dealer pull the dash and headunit and replace the part if it will not make a difference.

i had it done. the dealer did a good job; couldn't tell the dash had been mucked with. new ECU basically eliminated connection errors to my iPod Classic; i rarely have to unplug/plug it now.

the USB input isn't designed to work with an iPhone, though, so i wouldn't expect any difference. (and i don't try.) i use my iPhone for BT streaming and phone calls only. easier to select specific tracks right on the iPhone too, so i basically use the USB iPod to shuffle my entire music library.

as for charging, i keep a Scosche low profile, dual 10W USB charger in the 12V behind the flip-up door in the center stack. charges the iPhone super fast (faster than the factory USB would) and keeps my phone way more accessible than the glovebox too.

I just don't get why it works with the iPod but has iPhone issues. They are both Apple, both run the exact same OS, just a minor difference of the cellular hardware to one. IMO they should perform the exact same (obviously they don't though). I have a Ram mount for the phone so the cable running from the glove box is better for me than that it would be from the console. The 10W charger is meant for the iPad, the iPhone is suppose to run the 5W, that is why it charges so fast! For the longest time I kept a 16gb jumpdrive in the usb slot, but liked the thought of the iPhone there better.

I know this TSB covers other models as well. Might have to surf their forums to see if it made a difference on the iPhone (even though it was not designed for that). I would be surprised if there was not at least some improvement.

The 10W charger is meant for the iPad, the iPhone is suppose to run the 5W, that is why it charges so fast!

that's a common misconception, but it's actually perfectly fine to charge an iPhone (and numerous other Apple devices) with the iPad power adapter. Apple even endorses this practice with its new, 12W iPad power adapter. there's some fairly sophisticated circuitry in those buggers to ensure they only take/deliver what the device needs—and can safely handle.

if you discover anything revealing re: iPhone via USB, be sure to post it up. i'm sure there are loads of others interested as well.

personally i've found that understanding and living within the (admittedly limited) boundaries of the factory Nav/stereo has been critical to keeping me reasonably satisfied with it.
