Is it possible to add TRD PRO suspension?

TRD PRO Bilstein Shocks &TRD-Tuned Front Springs Now an Available Accessory for Trail

I've been going through the same process of many of you, trying to figure out which 4Runner I want and what type of suspension. What I finally settled on, is a 4Runner Trail Premium with KDSS and TRD Suspension. But after reading many posts, I was worried that this not a viable or smart option, since many described KDSS and TRD Suspension was not compatible.

I just went out to Toyota to build a new 4Runner Trail Premium. I selected the KDSS Package (additional $1000). When I went to Accessories, there was a new option that I have not seen in the past - TRD PRO Bilstein Shocks with TRD-tuned Front Springs (additional $1799).

Is my assumption correct, that this is the same suspension that is on the TRD? If so, I wonder how TRD accessory warranty on the Trail compares to the TRD model.

Is there anything else I should take into concern?

TRD Suspension & Skid Plate not Compatible with KDSS

I went to Toyota dealership with the documentation from my previous post. I spoke with the technician, and he mentioned that the TRD suspension and TRD Skid Plate were not compatible with KDSS.

The technician actually had a 2015 4Runner Trail Premium, with the 3" Toy Tec Boss Kit, but different tires and wheels. He also had the ARB Skid Plate. It looked pretty sweet. And based on the technician comments, he off roads quite a bit in Colorado above treeline and it's very functional.

The Toy Tec Boss Kit and Skid Plate are after market parts and would not be installed by the Toyota dealership, but a 3rd party.

The attached image is the quote that the Toyota dealership provided. Does anyone have thoughts on this quote?

I hope this clears up some confusion.

A note, the sales person mentioned that I could get the TRD Suspension and KDSS, but it would have to be custom built from Toyota and would take 3 months to get. Not sure if this was true or not and did not.

Toytec Boss from the Toytec site and Total Automotive (both vendors who offer discounts here) sell the kit for around $1,300. The all terrains should run around $1,000 including install. That's max $2,300 for that line item. I don't know exact figures for that sort of install but I know it should be way less then $2,000, like at least half of that. There are definitely more knowledgeable people on here then me who have already done this install but I have done some research as I'm looking into the Boss or Bilstein 6112/5160 suspension upgrade in the future. I'm going to get a dealer quote tomorrow since I'm taking mine in for its 10k service just to get some numbers rolling in my head. I can let you know what they tell me but I'm definitely buying through one of the vendors on this forum for max discount not MSRP+ pricing.

The skid plate definitely won't accommodate KDSS. But you're right about the web site allowing you to select the TRD suspension with KDSS. I don't remember that being an option. I wouldn't buy from a dealer that has window sealant and administrative fee listed as an option. And you're paying a premium vs aftermarket on the lift, it appears. I'd force this issue and get a build to order deal put together to see how long it really takes, if that's what you want. I hate buying cars from the dealerships....

Would you install BILSTEIN 6112 instead of TRD PRO? I want 1" front lift and a bit better suspension then stock Trail

Yes, and I have.
It also leaves you the option to lift higher if the need arises.
You can purchase 6112's for the front and 5160's for the rear with less $$$ than you can purchase just the front TRD suspension coilovers.

All the parts are listed in my build.

The ride is firmer than the OEM because the springs are 610lb Eibach's.
Not as bouncy, but firmer on the highway. Absorb bumps offroad because the are digressive valving on the shocks.

I have no input as to how this will impact your physical condition!

If I do only front shock will it work also, or both front and rear needs to be replaced?

Personally, for the best results, 6112's and 5160's.
They are paired to respond similarly because of how they are valved.

I wouldn't do the fronts only.

Hi , I'll try . As far as the ground clearance in Toyotas own literature published you have less ground clearance due to the sway bar bracket design on the rear axle and also the bracket design on the front lower control arm. Also the hoses and frame mounted oil canisters tend to be vulnerable. The system is also heavy for obvious reasons. The reason that Toyota does not offer a lift with KDSS and it is not advised to lift a vehicle with is the same reason it's not advisable to lift a truck with stock shocks. The KDSS cylinders have a predetermined stroke in and out when you lift the vehicle you move that stroke near the top so you have less down travel it's like putting on a lift kit or a long travel kit but leaving the stock shocks. You will hear the KDSS cylinders bottom and top out like a shock would when you reach their limits. And Toyotas design is for the shock to limit down travel not the KDSS cylinders so there's another durability issue. Another problem and the reason that Toyota did not offer it on the TRD pro is heat the increased stroke generates heat which equals fade which equals the sway bars losing their effectiveness in high-speed off Road type desert , The opposite of what you want on the TRD pro. KDSS is a good system and it has its place if left stock it works great and does what it's intended to do , allow a vehicle to have better Street manners and still go off road that's why it's on the Lexus , and not the FJ , it's not primarily designed for off-road it's more a design for a compromise to go on road as the sway bars are much larger.
Note This is only for you asking these questions I have been flamed for this many times. I hope this explanation helps in someway.

BUT driving on some roads in Glacier park was not pleasant (can feel every small bump , may be this is the way offroad suspension should behave). I'm new to mods and learning at my cost

Main question is will this combo KDSS with TRD pro shocks wears off KDSS prematurely ?

I ride 90% highway and only October - November some gravel/offroad during hunting.

Should I go back to stock suspension?

My impression that the height did not change at all from the stock, the ride is not so much plush , and I feel every small bump , it does not rock forward when braking and more stable on high speed cornering. BUT driving on some roads in Glacier park was not pleasant (can feel every small bump , may be this is the way offroad suspension should behave). I'm new to mods and learning at my cost

The install was performed by toyota dealer, so I assume no leak or anything. Yes , im not happy that I lost plush ride on highway.

No sure what suspension package will give me Lexus ride on highway and good performance offroad. I don't do rock crawling just gravel , some logging roads

well my question is should I go with the TRD Pro suspension? It sounds like it levels off the 4Runner and may give it a better shocks, etc. and cost a little more than others do but I'm just trying to give my 2015 trail 4runner a better look than stock even though it is stock on the TRD PRO 4Runner. Which I like. So am I wrong? I just don't know I am new to this and I really didnt want to spend a lot on getting this done if I can just buy the TRD PRO and bolt it on and go.

I would buy TRD trail with kdss , as I did , and get 5160/6100 ( might be off with exact numbers) shocks combo that are adjustable now rather then TRD pro shocks. But my town totally sucks, no real mechanic , so I opt for Toyota dealer mechanic. And paid twice much
