Is there a need for cup holders on the 96-98?

I FINALLY found the manual bezel. It's down in San Diego and will be getting shipped up to me tomorrow. I will get the manual bezel cup holder project put into gear as soon as the bezel is in my hands. I already have some design featured narrowed down. Due to the amount of movement of the shifter and 4WD shifter there just isn't enough space for a double cup holder. It looks like there IS enough space for a single and possible a cell phone slot. I will know all the details once I start pulling dimensions from the bezel.

So I now have some 1 1/8" self tap screws. They were actually quite hard to find in that length in the #6 size. They were also a little too long. I have to change the design so the lower screw recessed hole is more shallow which pushes the screws out to the correct depth. The batch that is on the machines now all have that change but the batch that got shipped yesterday and today will have the standard two screws. The fitment changes were on the ones that shipped yesterday and today. All cup holders going out should be very snug. From here on out they will come with two different screws. A shorter standard #6 screws up top and a self tap screw for the bottom so folks with short drill bits or no drill at all can just thread it in with a regular screw driver. the screw will drill its own hole as it goes in. No need for a drill.

I can't wait for a manual one! I dig the single cup design w/ cell phone holder and pen/sharpie holder.

I wonder if they differ from manual with t- case and one without.

I finally got some time to install mine. I'm really happy that I have proper cup holders now!!! Thanks again for taking the time to R&D this!!


Like others the shifter was not centered in the opening. Mine was actually completely pressing against the right side. I didn't want a gap so I did as told and started with the front screw and pressed the console so it would be flush (somewhat centering shifter) but this also pressed up against the shifter and cause a squeaky noise. So, from there I didn't a little ghetto engineering. I cut the end off of a zip tie and wedged it between the shifter and console so the shifter wouldn't rub the cup holder. You can see it in the picture. It's white. If I had a black one you probably wouldn't have noticed.


One idea I had for your future designs is to take the taper out of the small holder. it will hold my water bottle but it won't go all they way down. My wife has the same kind so if she rides with me, we will use both holders. It's not a deal breaker by any means, but just an idea for an improvement.

I got mine and installed it. I love it. The only complaint i have is with the screws. There much longer than they need to be and the top of the screw has no threads. So you tighten and it just started spinning because it ran out of threads. So i got new screws and it rocks.

Sorry about the screw issue. Your comment about the thread not being long enough got me a little confused. The screws I ship (thought I was shipping)are threaded the full shaft. I just went out to the garage with my wife and asked her to show me what screws she has been sending out with the 4Runner cup holders. She handed me a box of screws we use for the 80 series cup holders. Apparently I didn't do a good job explaining the difference. She was unaware of the key differences. The good news is that the last batch of cup holders got the self taping screw for the lower hole. It makes install a little easier and accounts for folks with the short drill bits. All you need is a Phillips screw driver. I will make sure the correct screws are sent out from here on out. In my wife's defense they are the same length and diameter, just a different type of thread. There always seems to be these minor obstacles when I first release a new product. Those little details you forget to pass on to the people you work with or those assumptions you make about what they should know. That is 100% my fault for not being clear with my wife on the differences.

Alright guys, it's time for an update. Many of you asked for a cup holder for the manual tranny. It has been a huge PITA. The curves and angles were a lot more complicated then I expected. I went through about a dozen prototypes before I got a really good fit. Right now I have to get it installed to make sure there are no dash or shifter interference issues. Unfortunately there was no way to fit a double cup holder there. The shifters left very little room to work with. I also need to know if the 3rd gen came in a manual 2WD option? If so, anyone got pics? I hope to have this manual tranny cup holder up on my site soon. I just have to verify fitment on everything first. Here is the last prototype I made.

With regards to the single cup holder, how much bigger (ie. depth and overall diameter) is it compared to the two factory ones in the 99+??
My fav coffee cup doesn't fit in the factory hole and would be interested in one if it can accommodate a larger cup.

The inside diameter of the insert is 3". That holds the 44oz. drink from your local fast food joint with ease. If you remove the insert the cup holder body inside diameter is 3.7" which is about 1/10th of an inch larger than a Nalgene bottle. I made the diameter that size specifically to hold those large sports water bottles. I also have a small insert that goes inside the main insert that reduces the inner diameter down to 2.6". That's to hold the grocery store water bottles and a soda can. Between the 3 sizes, you should just about be able to hold any drink container and have it be secure. If you look at the 80 series cup holders on my site www.bh3dprinting.com they have the insert (with pics) as an option. I will be adding that to the 4Runner cup holders as an option soon. I need to build up my stock first. I have been getting slammed with orders over the last month and am havinga hard time rebuilding inventory.

A concern was brought to my attention about the possible reduced leg room of the passenger sitting shotgun on the 3rd gen cup holders. I personally have installed a few and sat shotgun during each install. The cup holder was right next to me but I didn't feel my space was being encroached upon. I told the person who had the concern I would see if I could get guys on this site to post pics of their cup holder installed with someone sitting shotgun in a comfortable position. I can't argue that the passenger space will be reduced with the cup holder but I don't believe it will make sitting shotgun any less comfortable.

I need this soooooo bad! Over the years I have done many things to make up for the lack of cup holders, mainly using the almost useless rear cup holders that are sort of broken.

I would buy this in a heartbeat. I have a 96 Manual transmission 4wd. I will snap one when you get them on your site! Is it weird that I am super excited already?

Question. I have an add-on wood kit installed. It adds some thickness on-top of the factory black plastic. Would this effect anything? This would be the same thickess as some "SR5" models have with the optional Toyota wood kit. Also, for fun, could this be made in a wood color?

I installed a cup holder on one with wood grain a couple weeks back and didn't have an issue. I did notice the outer rounded edge was a tad larger which left a very tiny gap in one spot that was not there with the non wood grain console but it was extremely minor. It still sat snug and secure on the console.

So we have two people (probably more) that would like to see someone sitting in the passenger seat with the cup holder installed. Can someone help me out with this pic? I think I just need to go pick up a 3rd gen. I owned a 1st, and a 2nd back in the college days. It would be logical to now get a 3rd gen. Just need to convince the wife.
