If I remember correctly from working with Toyota in the Gulf States Toyota region, there were 2 types of running boards usually available from the dealership: one of is an OEM made by Toyota manufacturing....and the other is made for the distributor from a different source to be installed by them at a lower cost....the distributor equipments are usually very similar to the OEM's, but very slight differences...
when you purchase a vehicle that goes through a distributor, there are usually 2 columns on the Monroney sticker, the first column (the one in the middle) shows your MSRP on top with no option, then the FACTORY options are itemized down the column....then the second column has your DISTRIBUTOR added options, and the final price at the bottom with Delivery/Processing fee added....Distributors usually have their own packages/accessories that are similar to the factory's...this is why sometimes when you purchase a vehicle with an acccesory that is installed by the distributor that is similar to the factory's (like backup sensors, or backup camera, entertainment system/DVD, etc...), they operate differently, and also does not look like the item of the same name in the owner's manual...
here's an example for those of you who live in a state that has a distributor, who bought a Toyota previously with alloy wheel upgrade (meaning standard OEM wheels on the vehicle were steel wheels with hubcaps/wheel covers, and it came with alloy wheels...mainly, say, Corolla, Yaris, Camry, etc.)...now go look at the center cap of your wheels...does the center cap have the word "TOYOTA" or a "T" in the middle or does it have the Toyota symbol (the double-halo T) in the middle?
If you have the Toyota symbol, then you got factory wheels, if you have TOYOTA or a T, then you have a distributor wheels....
My last 2010 4Runner had running boards installed by the distributor, and they had the cover flaps....
