Issues with ABS, cruise, and turn signal

Hello All,

I have been viewing this forum for some time and decided it was time to join. I am currently on my second 4runner (2006 sr5 Touring edition). My issue seems to be a combination of other issues I have read about. When I hit my left or right turn signal, my ABS, Slip Indicator, and VSC trac light up. Furthermore, if I use the turn signal (or the emergency flasher for that matter), the cruise control will kick off and the engine seems to rev up slightly. If I do not use my turn signal, none of the other issues occur. There is no CEL light on, so no codes unless I go to the dealer. I have owned the truck for approximately 2 months, with the issues beginning about 2 weeks ago. The truck seems to drive fine. There is a U-Haul brand hitch with a 7-point wiring harness. I have disconnected the wiring harness with no apparent effect. Any help you guys can offer will be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

You don't have aftermarket LED tail lights, do you?

I would check around the rear hitch and pull off the tail lights to make sure somebody didn't do some shady trailer wiring. Check all the wiring harnesses there for any signs of tapping into. I would remove any aftermarket brake/turn signal converters as well. Also check under the dash to make sure that if the 4runner had a electric brake controller (usually identified by 2 screw holes on the panel below the steering column 1-3 inches apart) that it was wired/removed properly. Sounds like to me that when the turn signal is applied the voltage is backfeeding through the brake light circuit causing all the lights. When standing behind the 4runner and having someone else operate the turn signals/brakes/ tail markers, do they work as they should?

When I look at the brake lights, turn signal, etc., they all appear to be working properly. I will go under and more closely inspect the wiring harness. I hope to chase this thing down-the lights are bothersome! Thanks

Today I went under and checked the wiring harness under the truck. I decided to call the dealership and speak to a service guy. He said he had never heard of this issue before. Suggested I check to make sure all the plugs for the turn signal switch were tight. I checked them all with no change. He said it could be a bad turn signal switch and that I could replace it (to the tune of $350), but that it would be a complete guess as to whether or not it would fix the problem. I suppose I don't like the notion that I am going to spend that much on a guess. Any thoughts?

Also, the brake lights are factory lights, as best I can tell.

If everything else is perfectly stock then I would guess the turn signal switch as well. Should be able to test it with a multi-meter before spending the $350. I would start by finding a pin-out diagram of what each pin's function should be. Possibly a failed diode in there. I think at this point if I were going to fix it myself I would get a complete wiring diagram of the brake and turn signal circuits to see what other (if any) components they run through together.

Thank you very much. Do you think replacing this switch is better left to the experts or is it something a novice could do?

I haven't had the steering column apart to look at it. On most newer fords its not that bad. Some of the late 80s - mid 90s gms were a pain. I guess it depends on how handy you are, patience level, and the amount of tools you have. Give your self plenty of time so you don't rush. Take one step at a time. Look online for a factory service manual for the procedure or a least an exploded view to see if it is in fact something you could do.
