Its all fun and games until dad blows the engine

The RP HMX oil has Synerlec in it, which some oil pundits say are derived from unicorn tears. I don't know how much I would put in such a statement but the HMX oil is good, my brother uses it in his Chevy truck, which aided, at least in his mind, a reduction in the first start in the morning lifter tick. Past that I don't know. I do use their compressor oil with the aforementioned Synerlec with good results.

My cousin bought a new black 95 SC300 back in the day. Bedded down with the general manager until she got the price she was aiming for then dumped him like 3rd period French. Those days were the swan song for Lexus; today's Lexus stuff can't even compare except for the one LFA I sat in.

Keep the pics and saga rolling......

I've been looking at that oil for a while, figured this is a great time to give it a whirl. Thats a pretty good story about the Lexus, wish I could pull that off ;-)

Upper oil pan, lower oil pan, windage tray, pickup tube, from 2uz engine.
Idler pulley from 2uz engine to replace hydro fan pump
Motor mount templates (got you covered)
Trans mount Templates (got you covered)
Wiring pinnouts (got you covered)
Access to "Toyota Information Services" download all wiring diagrams and info for 2000 4runner and 199? Lexus sc400. (15.00)
Flexible Universal lower radiator hose. (Summit Racing)
Drive Shaft Shop to extend and shorten shafts
Exhaust shop (need to save flanges from Lexus cats.)
Power Steering Pump and pully assy from LS400 (Two birds with one Stone)

I'm sure there are more things you can do in advance, here's a good start.

Great, I'll take all the help I can get! I located a 2UZ in the junkyard in Evansville, might make the trip down next week and see what I can come up with. Thought about going ahead and doing the hyd fan delete while I'm driving the Lex, seems beneficial. I've also read that the stock front driveshaft of the seq/tundra may work in this application, going to try to get one of those too. I can probably do the rear myself.

Back to the shop tomorrow, I'll try to get some pic of the damage on the 5VZ.

This is going to be awesome...I'm excited all over again...

P.S. my Wife and I have family and friends in and around Marion Ill. Benton and Carbondale.

I'm excited too! Ready to get all of this figured out, thinking more about cams and headers. Did you ever check out aftermarket ECU's? Seems like it would be a better option while all the work is going into it. Much more $$$ though :(

I went to college in Carbondale, and I seem to be in Marion from time to time. It has grown a lot in the last few years. It's a beautiful area.

Lots of people have done amazing things with the 1UZ engine. I saw a vid the other day of a built 1UZ in a sprint car. They were running custom grind cams, custom pistons and a tunnel ram with a big demon carb atop it making 450hp...I've also seen them used in open wheel and just about every other race application you can think of. Thing is though, it's almost always a custom set up...not a whole lot of aftermarket support for them.

I did look at a few different header options when planning my swap but I just went with the factory SC manifolds, Somewhat poor design in terms of flow, but tuck in super tight and space is a factor...The exhaust will be opened up quite a bit by just using a good flowing muffler and deleting the cats and resonators. (do you have emissions testing)

As for cams and standalone ECU, I didn't think they were necessary for the power I was looking for. I think you will be pleasantly surprised by the available grunt of the 1UZ in its stock form...

I did re-gear to 5:29 (I'm on 35s)...I think a re-gear is the best mod as far as taking full advantage of your available power.

Oh I definitely think it will have plenty of power for the 4runner, I don't want to get into major drivetrain mods either. I'm just trying to figure out the optimal setup for the 1UZ in our application. A higher torque profile of the 2UZ combined with the light weight of this engine intrigues me. The headers off of the ls400 loo like they are a little better design, just figured i'd look into that while installing them will be easy :wink2:

I have not re-geared but I like the way it drives on the highway now, I'm consistently getting 17-18mpg. My mileage actually dropped about 1mpg when I went from 33's to 31.5's.

I also like the idea of the flexibility of the aftermarket ECU's. Being able to run different grades of gas, including E85, effectively would be nice. Then later on if I want to get nasty with it the sky is the limit. I was looking at these, but haven't gotten very far into the research yet.

This is strange, there is a rod peeking out of my oil pan....

Went to the DMV this morning to license the Lex. They are having budgetary problems in the state and are afraid of shutting down. It shows in the bathroom from the lack of TP......

Maybe you are supposed to use one of those useless forms in that box in the corner...

Does that commode have a "Jockey Shifter"

I hope you got to ride in alanflies's 4runner.

In South Carolina the DMV bathroom used to be an outhouse in the rural cities.

Every time I see one of these threads I'm so grateful to live where I do. I don't think I ever want to live in a place so boring that mud looks like fun.

I did get to ride in it, and it was amazing.

LOL on the outhouse, you wouldn't get very far in Illinois like that!:toilet3:

I'm just grateful that I get the freedom to do things like this, and have the skills to fix it after I tear it up :wink2:

Haha, I explained it earlier. I had recently installed it and hadn't got my deck plate mod fixed yet.... :ybrick:

Yeah, I have alot of pity that you lost this 4runner engine, but to be honest, having read the arguments on whether the deckplate mod actually gains any benefits, and the lack of hard evidence that it does, I gotta give the I told you so of "this is why it's a bad mod". The stock intake I'm sure would have survived it; you can find some pretty amazing videos of a bow wave over the hood that the stock intake doesn't flood during.

You can of course say that you should have known better and it wasn't the mod's fault, but if you had decided to not take this water route, then the mod would have kept you out of the wheeling you wanted to do at the time you wanted to do it with you your family, which kind of defeats the purpose.

I know alot of guys like it, but seriously, the deckplate mod needs to die...

Anyway, all that said, it looks like you'll be having fun with the rebuild, and at least you have the means to have fun with this project. Looking forward to the build thread.

The whole point of the the deckplate mod it to put the deckplate back in when wheeling or in wet weather... with the deckplate in it's back to being an airtight stock airbox again. I know the OP understood this since he mentioned it back in the first post on how it was a mistake...

Anyways, back on topic, looks like you've got your work cut out for you! This seems like a 3rd/fun vehicle and not a necessity so have fun with it! It's nice to be able to work on stuff and not be pressed with time constraints or having to bother with rental cars.

I agree about the deck plate mod, just not worth the gains. Definitely knew better, just got caught up in all the excitement ;) We had a lot of fun, everyone came away unscathed so I call it a win!

So even with the snorkel, cuz of the deckplate, all that water got in the engine?

Yeah, the snorkel doesn't work well if you have a big 4" hole in the airbox...

Exactly.

I never got another cover to swap them out, not sure if I will do that or just replace the cover.

The 4runner was my DD so I had to a bit of scrambling to get some wheels but it all worked out. I'm pretty anxious to get her back on the road!

Got everything prepped for the engine replacement today, should be able to start tomorrow if football allows ;-)

Man, what a nice place to work...especially since we're getting blistering cold and snow flurries today...I'm rooting for you, and the Steelers...Can you believe that Steelers/Bengals game...

P.S. That 5vz looks a lot better in your shop than it did in mine...
Did that heater valve work for you?
