I wouldn't worry about reliability. I had a bmw that took to 260k miles before selling. Owned a VW - no reliability issues, but annoying to do regular maintenance. I come from a MB family, and all the MB's were taken into high mileage with no major issues. The MB's are much easier to work on than VW, and even my 4R! There's no shortage of people saying german cars or american cars or british cars aren't worth their sh!t. Whatever! There are bad apples by every brand. Honda VCM. Tundra rust.
The early TREG's were loaded with somewhat unproven technology like air suspension and terrain control (if i recall), which I think that gave them a bad reputation. TREG's lost many of those gadgets, so I would bet the new ones will be just as reliable as anything. The 2009+ VW diesels are engineering masterpieces.
Different vehicle, different pros/cons. I'm jealous of your diesel, until I hit some washed out fire roads

This is by far one of the best forums.....hence I'll be checking in from time to time to see what everyone is doing with their rides.
From what I'm finding so far, the VW forums are not that active, unless you have a GTI.

Thanks for the encouraging words. But if a zombie Apocalypse breaks out, this thing is going back and I'm picking up a TE 4runner or a Land Cruiser :uzi:
