Its Flooding Down In Texas And My 4Runner May Be A Victim

Well, guys.....I got some bad news today. I'm sure everyone has heard about all the flooding that Houston has seen this week. I am very proud of the way my city has responded. A group of 4x4 folks has formed the FB Page " Houston Area Off Road Recovery" that organizes recoveries for folks at no charge. It is an amazing idea.

I guess I went in a little deep with my 4Runner to help pull out this guy in his minivan and ended up stalling out . I got him out though and ended up winching myself out to dry land. I had the rig towed to a shop and they just sent me the repair bill. They say my engine seized up and I am going to need a whole new motor. Its going to cost over $8k to fix! This really sucks. I have since had it towed to another shop for a second opinion and am awaiting their prognosis.

My question is a hypothetical one. IF I have to get a new motor, is there a bigger (V8) Toyota motor that would be compatible with my 2014 Unlimited?

I have never pulled an engine and really have no idea what factors go into swapping one engine for another, so please excuse my ignorance here.

That sucks, bro. You have one of the best builds on this forum aesthetically and functionally. I'm sure it would be possible to swap out to a V8 but then you have to consider a new transmission/CPU/everything in between to get it working. It's all possible as long as you are willing to fork up the money for it. It's not like the older vehicles where people can do a tranny swap from auto-manual and engine swaps.

Sorry to hear that man. At least you were doing a noble thing when it happened. For whatever that's worth.

I cant imagine the 5.7L would fit but maybe, just maybe, the 4.7L would fit. I do know a kid that put an LS2(?) 6.0L from a GTO in a Tacoma and it fit beautifully so you could always go down a similar road.

Although the cost to convert could easily exceed the direct replacement cost. Then there is the likelihood of drivability issues down the road since its newer vehicle and there is no guarantee the systems would integrate and behave regardless of what components are used.

Engine swaps should not be taken lightly and should be well researched and well thought out prior to execution.

When I was younger and into heavily modifying race cars, there was the adage...speed costs money...how fast do you want to go?

Could you locate a wrecked GX470/460 and swap? Sure! Will it work? Maybe! Are there shops between Houston, Dallas, SA and Austin that could help you make it work? Absolutely. Will any of these solutions be cheaper than $8k? NOPE.

Want to be the first V8 5th Gen (that I've seen) go for it!
 
better to call insurance, I have been extra cautious to run over any water these days after seeing a Durango driver drown under the bridge in Houston...
 
The neatest conversion you could knock out is to contact dieseltoys.com (located in SA) and see about signing up for a swap spot (list is easily 6mo long).

If you're really serious and want to see what kind of shops I've found in Texas that could be of help, let me know. 1 wrecked Lexus and a lot of time and patience and it could be done.

She drove around a barrier, a tow truck and ignored the worker that tried chasing her. She fumbled around for 13 minutes ON HER CELLPHONE while her vehicle sank ...instead of ...you know exiting the vehicle.

The gene pool will not miss her learned helplessness.

Well, anyone that knows me would surely tell you that I love to push the envelope of what can be done. So IF it come to this option, Id love to see how much MORE awesome I could make this rig,

Really? That sounds like she was drunk or out of her mind... Anyway, she might get stuck in the vehicle because of high water with high pressure on the doors. Exit the vehicle right away if the it stalls in the water.

I could justify spending say 2k on a 10k upgrade. IF it meant a greater jump in performance and power
 
it doesn't make any sense at all to even consider paying for an $8k repair out of pocket vs filing a comp claim
