Well, we installed new starter and did a complete tune up. The truck started and then locked up! I'm back to sq 1
Again, guessing here... but what I have seen happen is what I mentioned before. Most inexperienced folks first response to the engine dying in a water ingestion situation to try to start it... That is when the actual damage is done, not the initial stall (if it happened with very light throttle or idle)I'm not sure what you mean locked up. Did it turn off or violently stop with bad noises? If the engine ran - it's probably not seized. I promise you'd know very quickly. What would really help to diagnose it would be what codes the engine is throwing.
I have a few guesses, but not enough info. My first guess is that you have an air filter full of mud. Did you check that? It's your first line of defense. The filter will saturate with water and stall the engine normally before water gets into the engine.
Also can buy a scope that plugs into your cell phone to look in the cylinders for damage for about $30 on amazon. Pull the spark plugs and take a picture of the top of each piston and post it on here if you'd like some random free internet advice.
The GX 470 came with the 4.7 v8 and the same transmission we use. The GX 460 comes with the 4.6 and the 6 speed. I'm not sure if the transfer case is the same or not.
I don't think it would be impossible but it definitely won't be cheap or easy. However, if you pull it off (v8 swap) it would be off the charts awesome.
As for the engine locking up after starting, is it for sure locked up? Did you drain the oil before starting? Almost sounds like there was some water hiding somewhere leftover.
the way i see it is to attain a totaled GX whether it be 460 or 470. then take the entire powertrain; engine, trans, tcase, and all modules and harness. bolt it all in place of the stock 4runner powertrain and swap modules out then plug in and go. i know the 460 used a version of the 4th gen/ limited tcase where 2-4 was a lever in the cabin and HI-LO is actuated. i think the 470 is the same way.

The damage is usually a bent rod, but it can also hurt the bearings. So just because it turns over and starts after pulling the plugs and getting the water out.. does not mean it is good to go...

What is the latest on your engine situation?
Had to take it back in today. There was some noticeable play and jiggling in the steering wheel. ANy idea what could have caused that?
