JBL BT Issues with Samsung Galaxy S7 Active

Let me start off by saying that I have tried to do my due diligence by searching and researching for this on here and on the web but have come up empty; so if it is in here and I missed it I apologize in advance.

With that said my issue is this:

Own a 2011 Limited with the JBL DVD Nav and had to buy new phone since my old Galaxy S5 Active gave up the ghost. I bought a Galaxy S7 Active and found that after removing and resetting my 4RNR and doing the same on my new phone the best I could get was my calls to connect via BT but my media was no longer available. After searching here and seeing similar issues but all with the Entune system I wasn’t optimistic about my chances when I went into the dealership looking for help and or an update. I was told that there isn’t an update showing for this issue for my system and was told that there may never be one.

My question is this; is there a head unit that I can replace my JBL one with and will allow me to keep the rear-view camera view or is there a much simpler solution like just adding a new BT unit or are they not separate or compatible with other units? I am currently having to use the AUX port to listen to music and Google navigation (stock nav is so out of date it is of no use).

It's been awhile since I connected my S6 active to my JBL system, but if I remember correctly there was two separate things I had to do to get it connected properly. One for calls and one for media. I just can't remember what the two separate steps were. I'd play with it some more, you may just be missing a step somewhere. Try to put your radio on the BT option, then turn your phone blue tooth off and on. It may recognize it as a media player then.

Typically you would have to enable the calls feature and the media features separately but both myself and the service tech attempted this multiple times as well as the service manager and the cell phone sales guy to no avail. It slides over only to move back to off by itself. Upon start up it says BT connected and I can make calls but when I try to use spotify or something else it says portable player not connected. :doh:

Are you toggling the media option on your phone while it's connected? You should be able to see the 4Runner in the Bluetooth list while it's not connected to the truck - try enabling the media option at that point, and then reconnect. It might not like renegotiating after the connection has been made.

Also I know you said you reset the head unit, but I would go in and make sure the old phone isn't still showing in the truck's device list - this might be a "feature" so a common passenger can take calls on the truck, but only the primary driver can play music (I think the Bluetooth spec handles multiple "call" devices better than multiple "music" devices).

give this a try: remove all phones and media players from the head unit and then switch off ignition. turn ignition back on and...
1) add as a new phone (reimport address book)
2) add the phone again as a new media player; ensure it's set up to initiate connection FROM VEHICLE.

So it turns itself off even when it's not connected to the truck? That sounds like it might be a bug on the Android side, rather than the truck's.

One other thought - do you have a smartwatch or bluetooth headset or anything else that might have been connected while you were connecting to the truck? If so try removing the JBL entry on the phone's bluetooth settings, removing the phone from the truck's setting, and re-pair from scratch, making sure the phone isn't connected to anything else at the same time.

Also, have you paired the phone to anything else? That might be a good diagnostic check.
