JDM 2.4L Diesel w/5 Speed

So as I roam and scroll and soak up more information on this webiste than anything I have ever seen. Which is outstanding by the way. People putting out there what works and what doesnt. I found myself wondering a couple things. I see the superchargers, the turbo, I have even read in a few places where people tried to swap in a VW diesel. Everybodys looking for a little more power, and we all have a budget......here is the opionated question I will ask.

If you didnt have a time constraint, and happened to find a good, generally rust free frame. Do you think it would be worth it to take the time and try to throw a JDM 2.4L diesel on there? Do you think it would fit? Although I love my 4R, I have a love for diesel, and am just wondering if anyone thinks these two things go together?....

Just interested in what people have to say.

It'd be a neat swap. I think if you're wanting a diesel there's more bang for your buck, the 2.4 isn't exactly an awe inspiring motor. Even the 2LT only makes 90 hp and 140 ft/lbs (I think? Something like that anyway), my old 22RE made better numbers than that. I think you'd find it seriously underpowered for street use in a 3rd gen.

Unless you're hung up on the idea of doing a swap, I think the best way to get a truck with a 2.4 is to import one that already has one.

I think it's a gutless underpowered turd, just like every other truck motor Toyota was making at this time .

I had a 2.4 Turbo diesel in my last truck, an LN130 Hilux Surf (gen 2 4runner shape) it was the slowest piece of crap and sucked down fuel like no tomorrow. My current KZN185 Surf (3rd gen 4runner shape) has a 1KZ-TE Diesel engine, its 3 liters and a monumentally better engine than the 2.4. It still needs more power though.

I was interested to see if any of the Surf guys were going to post....I personally feel like I just would like to see a diesel in the Toyota in the states because we cant get them. Not to mention seeing the ones floating around Iraq and Afghanistan through the years that are still going. Theres a place in the US that will do it for you. Make it turn key and look stock....if you have 25k just laying around.

Check this 1kz swap. Plus it's 3.0, our 3rd gen did come with diesals !!!! But I'm guessing not in USA!!!

You can probably get the motor of a JDM place that sells jdm motors. Or like this guy, the whole front end of the car.

The 2.4L diesel is gutless even with a turbo. I found the 3.0L 1KZ to be a bit of a slug as well. It might be much better with some mods. Considering the cost of diesel plus the money you will spend on the swap, you are better off supercharging your 5VZ. If you must have diesel then go for the 1KD. More modern and powerful.

Yeah 1KZ goes with land cruiser prado which also has 3rd generation 4runner frame and suspension. Should be a perfect fit.
