there has been much debate over the use of chips/programmers, on the 4runner. all i can say is, after the borla exhaust & cai install, it seemed to loose some low end grunt, so i got a unichip, installed it, reset ecu,& was happy it gave me back my low end + a little extra. so i could now get full use of the previous mods. the chip was programmed exactly for these, (thats the only way to see any worthwhile results) & worked great for awhile, then little things started popping up, at first , dash lights going on, then, some sputtering, then stalling out while driving! each time this happened, i would reset, & it would be fine for about 2 weeks, then start all over again.to me, it seemed to have problems with other electrical things like , (aftermarket remote start, changing to a different air filter, hi-flo MAF, etc.) so after many resets,( the co. states all these things could cause the chip to go bad) i got fed up & removed the unichip, & modded the volant to be a true cai. & havent had any problems for months , also the modded volant seems to give me the same if not better results the uinchip 2 did. moral to the story is, in my opinion, dont waste the 600+ on a unichip, im not sure how the other devices will work,( also tried the venom 400 on a jeep, that is wired in like the jet chip, not much good either) but i wonder if they would fair any better. if you get better throttle response, +10 hp for 300 + dollars, & like it, then i guess its worth it for you, but better pickup usually leads to less mpg. that said, the jet programmers have gotten decent results on diesel & other makes of vec. & i have gotten good somewhat decent performance from them in other vec. ive owned, but from what i know now, theyre just not worth the $.
