Joining the 4th gen crew! Any suggestions on what to do first?

Let me start by saying, I am not new to 4runners. I just recently purchased a 2003 sport 4x4, After I crashed my 98' 4wd....


An awful accident that left me without a truck for around six months.


But now the day is here and im finally back in runner. Hard work and patients paid off and i was able to buy this beauty!! So help me out! im new to this 4th gen stuff, gimme some cool ideas!!!

Congrats! Looks like it's in good shape. Maybe take off the running boards and put some sliders on?

I just bought a 4th gen too, but I'm keeping my 3rd cause I still like it a lot. But anyway, do what I've been doing. Read all the stickies in this sub forum. There's TONS of ideas and info in them.

just keep it like that and that would still run fine on the road or offroad. you can offroad it that way. I've never did an upgrade on mine and I'm happy about it. what's the mileage?

sorry to see your 3rd Gen came down with a bad case of bitter beer face, but looks like you found a nice replacement. Congratulations.

what to do first? pretty open ended question.... I'd recommend baselining all the regular maintenance items/ fluids and then driving it for a few months as is and getting a feel for it before dumping money at it...

engine oil and filter
replace the engine air filter
clean the MAF sensor and throttle body
disconnect the battery (so the ECM can learn your driving habits with clean sensors and throttle body)
transfer case fluids
lube the driveshaft
F&R differential fluids
replace the sway bar bushings iwth greasabe polyuerethane ones (assuming the sway bars are still installed)
transmission fluid
engine coolant (hoses and clamps)
power steering fluid
replace the cabin air filter
give it a good vacuum
clean your sunroof gasket and fix the rattle (if it has one),

while your under it inspect the truck real good (suspension, cv axles, all your balljoints, frame) for future mods like frame preservation with POR-15 if needed.

I also look at all the Build threads on here as well. Everything has basically been done by someone so its nice to be able to see what people have done specifically to their rigs.

HUGE HELP!
Thanks everybody for the well wishes and ideas! im taking it slow and going over maintenance of the truck before getting too serious. Question though. I do have a bit of surface rust since the truck came from colorado and i was wondering tips and tricks before i go in with CLR and steel wool to clean it up before i paint.

Sorry to hear about the "3". Great rides to play with. Now since your familiar with the runners, sell it before your modding exspence becomes as much as you paid for it.LOL.
